Nelson Evening mail. TUESDAY, AUGUST 30, 1881.

Ws ttubhsn to-day reportß of four meetings which were held last Dight to discuss tho Representation Bill, and the gagging resolutions proposed by the Government. Such an expression of feeling as is contained in the resolutions, which appear to have been carried with much enthusiasm as -well as unanimity, Bhould surely carry some weight with it, not perhaps in the direction of influencing the Government, who have apparently made up their minds to « stonewall " Nelson, but with the members of the House who cannot fail to sympathise with a people who are fighting for dear life, and utterly fail to *cc what sin they have committed for which they are to be practically disfranchised. We can but add our own assurances of the strongest support we can possibly afford to those who are battling for our rights against such odds and at so much personal discomfort to themselves. We are glad to learn that Mr Hursthouse is now taking an active part in the fight. His littie lecture on the conservation of forests delivered in the House last night just before the small hours, jf not interesting throughout, answered the purpose of Btopping the way until the witching hour of 12-30, after which no further business of any kind could be commenced, and therefore it was useless for the House to continue to ait. The same tactics, we presume, will be pursued thi3 evening. We have been shown a telegram received in town to day from Mr Piit in which he says that tha stonewallers are masters of the situation, the Governmect being absolutely heiplesa. Whether he refers to only a temporary success, or intends to imply something more than that, we are not quite clear, but can but hope that he sees his way clear to defeating the Representation Bill, R-imors of all kinds appear to ba prevalent in Wellington, but for them we refer our readers to our correspondent's interesting telegrams.

Ax a meetiDg of directors in Johnston's United Company held yesterday, tenders •vere opened for driving 400ffc of tunnel, the prices ranging from 233 6i to 38s 6d. That of Jag. Anderson and party of ReeftoD, at the former price, was accepted : work to be commenced within 15 days or deposit of £10 to be forfeited. A further Allotment of shares was made, leaving now only 3600 unapplied for. With a considerable credit balance en band, and work in fall swing, we crcdict a good future for this Company. The directors have had an offer of 2s 6d per share for the balance of shares unallotted, but this waa immediately declined.

A card containing six photcgraphg, the work of MrGibba of Wellington, waa recrived by the Wanaka this morning and is now or. view at Mr J. Hounsell'a shop. It is headrd: "The Representation Bill— Attempt to t»ipo out N.-lson— The gallant band who iaid the foundation of the stone wall." The " g-ellant band " consi-ts of Messrs Shephard, Pitt, Levestaro, Gibbs, Reeves, Seddon, and tte likenesses are excpllent

Tim Parliamentary telegrams will be found on the first page.

Six candidates hare been nominated for the three vacancies in the City Council, namely, Messrs Bunny, Crewdson, Graham, Litt'e, Stringer, and Trask. The election will take place next Thursday week. Madame Lotti Wilrnot'a lecture on " Courtship and Marriage " will be deliverd at the Thtatre this evening.

" Wet or Dry," the long promised entertainment at the Wealeyan school-room will take pises this evening.

A xew Oddfellows Lodga will bo opened at Waimea West to-morrow with the custom ary ceremonies.

_ We wish to correct an error in the last line of " Nelsonian's " letter yesterday, in which "economy" was substituted for "borrowing."
