PRODUCE MARKETS.
The following is the report of the Canterbury Corn Exchange for the week ending Friday, the 19th August, 1881 :— The most noticeable feature of the week h the reported rise in the value of wheat in the Home markets. This is undoubtedly good news for the farming community, as a large proportion of that exported this year is on growers' account. Notwithstanding this increased value at Home, prices locally are at present not much affected (beyond giving a firmer tone to tbe market). This is to be accounted for from the fact that the millers are well stocked. Business during the week has been, on the whole, brisker some large parcels of wheat having changed' hands for shipment*. Wheat.-Good sound milling is worth from 4s to 4s 3d, f.0.b. ; second-class samples, 3s 6d to 4s. f.0.b. ; chick wheat, 23 6d to 3s, delivered in Christchurch. Oats.— -The market is without change, but although little or no business is being transacted, holders are firm in their demands. Best short, milling are. worth from 2s 3d to 2s 4d, f.0.b. ; good feed samples from Is lOd to 2s in Christchurch. Barley. — There is no change to report in the state of the market, and values are unchanged. Prime milling samples are saleable at from 3s to 3s 6d per bushel, delivered iD Christchurch ; Fecond rate to medium, 2s 4d to 2s 9d ; feed, Is 9d to 2s per bushel, delivered in Christchurch. Potatoes. — The market remains in much the same state, little or no business being transacted.' Holders are asking 40s at country stations. Buyers are not in the market. Last week's quotations must be repeated, viz., 35 s to 40s per ton, sacks extra. Grass Seed — The demand continues good, with a rather bare supply. First-class sampies are selling freely at from 53 6d to 6s per bushel, delivered in Christchurch. Cheese and Butter.— The state of the market is unaltered. The former is dull of sale at 3d to 3£d ; the lalter 7d to 7Ad, but very unsaleable. Hay, £2 10s to £2 15s per ton, delivered in Christchurch.
