RICHMOND HIGHWAY BOARD.
Board met on Saturday, 6th August. The members present were : Messrs G. Talbofc (chairman), W. ; Rout R Kidd, A. Harley, and P. Best: ' Tho minutes of (he previous meeting ■yvero read and confirmed. ~ ' '■ Tlio Inspector reported that he had. replaced an old rotten bridge "by Mr: Koil's .by a 10 inch drain, at a cost of £5 19s, tho pipes having been supplied by tho J:ito Road Board. According' to your instructions the road through Sloko is being repaired, the amount expended to date being £18 ss. I have to draw your attention to the following roads :—l. ;Mr Birkett's line - tho gorso is spreading half way across : Uio road, and where it was good Mr Bjrketfc has carted large stones from off his section on to it, making it dangerous to travel on. 2. The Clover Road lending to. Mr Rutherford's mill in places wants repairing. 3. The road leading to Aniseed Valley wants a little doing to. 4. The Appleby line, gorse hedges encroaching on the road, and clippings from hedges left at road sides for months. The Chairman of the County Council has been informed of the threatened danger to Appleby bridge^ and also as to damage done to ; protective works on the eastern bank. As several applications have been made i to mo for work, I should recommend \ that an offer of so much per cubic yard be made for broken stone, there being now none on hand, which would be i taken delivery of in any of the. paddocks abutting on the main lines of, road, it being the cheapest and best material for repairs. Resolved, That Mr Birkett be requested to move the obstructions placed by him opposite Mr Max's gate, and cover with gravel to the satisfaction of the Inspector the stones carted onto the road by him without the Board's consent, within . fourteen days from the dato of such notice, if not, the Inspector get the same done and sue Mr Birkett for the amount. That the question of repairs to the Clover Road be postponed. That the water tables on the hi'l leading to Aniseed Valley be seen to. That the Secretaiy give notice to persons to remove obstructions in the shape of hedge trimmings left on the roadsides, and to cut gorse hedges where overhanging the main roads, and if such notices are not attended to action will be taken. That the Inspector bo authorised to purchase broken metal at 3s 6d per cubic yard. Resolved, That tho rate of wages to be paid the day labor men be 5s per diem. Letter received from Colonial Secretary, in reply to one requesting the Governor to validate the rate struck by the late Waimea Road Board, referring the Board to Sections 5 and 6 of the Rating Act Amendment Act, 1878, which would probably meet the case. Secretary produced the new valuation roll made in accordance',iwith the new sections of the above 'cited Act, which Valuation roll was accepted ] and signed by the Chairman. Resolved,: That public notification be given of the attention of the Board to levy a rate of one shilling in the pound per annum under the provisions of the Rating Act, 1878, on the 20th day of August, 1881, for the period commencing on the 4th day of July, 1881, and ending 31st March, 1882, payable on the sth September, and the rate book remain open for inspection at Messrs Hodder and Co's store on and after the 20th instant, and the Board . to meet to hear objections to rate book on the 3rd September. Resolved, that the Secretary invite tenders for the lease of the several gravel reserves in the district. Letter from Manager of Colonial Bank stating amount of overdraft due by the late Waimea Road Board, including interest, was £162 os. Resolved, That a cheque be drawn for the amount. Warrants for £214 10s 8d were signed. The revised plan of the district was laid on the table. Resolved, That a special mcc ting of the Board be held on Saturday, the 20th inst., at 2*30 p.m.
