THE OHINEMURI GOLDFIELD.

According to accounts to hand by the last mail from the North an exceedingly rich find has been made at the Waitekauri. The correspondent of the Thames Advertiser -writes on the subject : — " Butler and Goonan's crushing is finished, and the tributers will retort to-day. There -will be fully 20000 ounces from the 180 tons of dirt put through, or over 1 1 ounces to the ton, and this from the reef just as broken j down — no picking or specimens. There is great excitement here, as it is an entirely new reef. Ground on the line of reef is all taken up, and companies are being formed." The mining reporter of the New Zealand Herald writes on the subject : — "Another incident of no little importance is the excellent return to hand from the Waitekauri— in fact, thia has been the all absorbing topic of conversation here. The yield has already brought the Waitekauri district once more into prominence, and the whole of the ground adjoining the Waitekauri mine has been taken up. In one or two instances companies have been formed with a view of prospecting the ground, and no doubt in a few days others will follow. Several who have visited the district during the week have expressed the opinion that Butler and party's run ■will produce £50,000 worth of gold. That this estimate is not a wild one is proved by the fact that the late return was considerably over £6000, besides which, this field is famous for its enormously rich, deposits — deposits which lie in a very small area of ground, as, for instance, the late patch in the Alburnia, or the Moanataiari, or even the now historical deposit of the Caledonia. If, however, there is anything like the above amount of gold in the block of ground immediately at command, it must be evident that, during the next few months, the district will receive considerable impetus, and that it is more than probable there will be no lack of capital with which to open up the adjoining claims."
