Tawhiao returned from Meicer to Ngaruawhia to-day, the chances of his visit to Auckland being thus abandoned. On the journey a Maori boy, one of Tawbiao's followers, attempted to jump from the train and was cut to pieces. Tawbiao actively exerted himself to allay the excitement caused by the accident among his followers. Chbistchuech, Friday. At the inquest this morning on Jeffrey Williams, who hung himself in a blacksmith's shop in Victorit Street yesterday, the jury returned a verdict of temporary insanity. To-day is observed as a holiday on account of the Hunt Club Steeplechases, and the business places and most of the shops are closed. DuNEDrN, Friday. A Conference of the Chamber of Commerce, Haibor Board, City Council, and Port Chalmers Council effirmed the desirability of erecting a new graving dock 500 feet long at a cost not exceeding £100,000. They also passed a resolution that a Bill should be introduced into Parliament for vesting the existing dock and harbor reserves in a trust with the object of facilitating the construction of the proposed dock. The Chairmen of the Harbor Board and Chamber, and the Mayors of Dunedin and Port Chalmers were appointed a deputation to proceed to Wellington en Monday to co-operate with Mr Macandrew in the matter. ■
Inveeoaroill, Friday. A young man named Scott, aged 22, employed on the Invercargili-Biverton railway, while ont shoot log a few daya ago had bis thumb blown off, the contents of the charge and part of the thumb tone lodging in his shoulder.
