Chbistchdrch, Wednesdaay. [ Captain Leary, of the Emperor, report 3' that on the loth July when about seventeen miles this side of Cape Terawiti he passed a brig which responded in rig and general description to that of the brig Firefly, reported as being missing. The rig of the Firefly is uncommon, and the boatswain of: the Emperor is almost sore that the vessel men -was her. She had all sail set, and was not disabled in any way. Thursday. Two memorials are being signed here thanking Sir George Grey for hia efforts in connection with the Affirmation in Lieu of Oaths Bill, and expressing the hope that he will be more successful at some future time. At a meeting of. the Rugby Uoion Football Club last night, it was resolved to take: steps, to ascertain whether the Auckland footballers still intend to visit Wellington. A Sub-Committee was also appointed to: select an Interprovincial Team. ! Donedin, Wednesday. At a meeting of the Colonial Land share holders held to-day the report of the; Directors recommending 6 per cent dividend' was adopted. During th« meeting the chair-' man, Mr George M'Lean, stated that the amount of mortgages executed in the Colony •: under the Land Transfer Act alone duriDg the last twenty months reached the enormous sum of £4,315,000, {and of] this Otago and Southland represented £2,802,000. The Refrigerating Company have received ■ a cablegram advising them of the purchasing of machine* in London, and they have telegraphed urging their immediate shipment. Only 600 shares are now unallotted. Thursday. * The Equitable Investment Company have declared a dividend of ten per cent. A five roomed house at Palmerston belonging to John Bethaine has been burned done. It was insured in the National for £150. Wellington, Thursday. Another heavy slip occurred on the Wellington — Masterton line yesterday afternoon. Several hundred tons of earth came down covering the line for a distance of three chains. A gang of men were set to work this morning to clear away the debris, and the line is expected to be clear by tomorrow. ' Timaru, Thursday. One Tuesday night someone entered Mr Reeves' house on his farm at Otaio end took a cash box containing valuable papers of no use to anyone but the owner. It was found with the lid burst open lying on the gravel walk in front of the house next morning, the contents being intact. Mr Beeves lives alone and the servants reside on the premises, (Four savage dogs ara kept, but strange to say they allowed the thief be unnoticed. The police are investigating, Wanganui, Thursday. Mr J. R. Francis, late second master of Wellington College, has been appointed head-master of the Wacganui District High School. There were thirteen applicants, seven of them University graduates. A Maori whare was burned at Putikikie yeßterday, and an old Maori woman, the wife of the late cliief Teretimana, was burned to death. Invercabgill, Thursday. The first section (about six miles) of the Orepuki railway was opened yesterday. There was no demonstration, and no public intimation of the opening, to the great indignation of the residents in Riverton. The body of John McNaoghton, au old resident at Riverton, wio has been missing since Sunday, was found this morning in the Aparina estuary.' Deceased had recently shown signs of mental derangement.
