WELLINGTON.
(From our own correspondent ) [By Telegraph.] Tuesday, 11pm. It Is currently rumored to-Dight that Mr Finn will vote with the Government, and that Mr Driver will not return from Dunedin in time for the division. If so this will increase the Ministerial majority to five or six. It i» also whispered that" Mr Pyke may be unable to leave bis editorial duties on the Herald to attend the division. Some of the Opposition still profess to be jubilant and talk about their victory baing certain, bat the majority admit frankly that tney are beaten, but console themselves with the idea that in any case they have prevented the Government measnreß being carried, as they will almost certainly be withdrawn even if the Government win. The following works are proposed to be undertaken in tbe Nelson district in order to open np land for settlement :— Cobden via Coal Creek to Seventeen Mile Beach diggings This will open out Crown lands and at the same time greatly improve the access to a mining population of 300 persons. — Grey Valley via Bell Hill and Lake Brunner to Bruee'a Paddock. Teremakau. This penetrates an extensive area of level bush land of about 40,000 acres suitable for settlement and known to be auriferous. — Aorere Valley, in continuation of the road already formed, so as to open through communication to Gonland Downa. — Wakefleld to Stanley Brook. This will improva commuication between tbe Wakefleld railway ttafciou and a district partly : settled in the Upper Motueka Valley. There \

This Day, 1.35 p.m. ThereJs nothing fresh to-day in the way of political gossip, the Government still cxi pecting to have a majority of two or three. The Wastp, Lands Committee have reported on the petitions of several County Councils for the restoration of the 20 per cent of Land fund to the effect that in the opinion of the Committee such restoration is fair and reasonable* and the Committee recommend it accordingly. The Colonial industries Committee make an interim report recommending, (1) That the same duty be imposed on maize as on other cereals excepting on imports from ; (2) That the duty on tobacco grown in the Colony bo reduced to one shilling per pound for five years. e^^^L-m!s-siiMjs-'r»'-i!ii»ji" 1 ga-^qga^g^
