CITY COUNCIL.

The Council met at 7 o'clock last night, Present: The Mayor, Crs Levien, Greig, Graham, Honnsell, Everett, Little, and Hatley. It was decided thofc the puriri trees presented to the Corporation bj Mr Webb should be planted in the Botanical Reserve. A letter was received from Mr E. Born on behalf of the Reform Association stating that it was rumored that the City Surveyor had prepared specifications for certain works at Sunnyside eiuce the Council had passed a resolution prohibiting their employees to Undertake outside work. It was unanimously decided on the motion of Cr Everett to reply that if Mr Darn or any other ratepayer had any charge to make against the Council's s-rvants it would be investigated on being duly j referred in writing. A letter was received from the Secretary of the Acclimatisation Society asking per mission to shoot sbaes within the town boundary as the ova hatching season was approachingr and these birds were very destructive. Permission granted to the Secretary personally, the Mayor stating that the application referred specially to one particular that waa in the habit of visiting the hatching pon3s. A letter was received from Mr Dirby complaining of the enoroacf-ment m^de upor, and d( mage done tc, Mrs Thornton'* prope: ty in Mary Ann-street by depositing the road scrapings agairst the hedge. The Surveyor stated ihat the nuisance complained of would be remedied as soon as the work at present in hand was completed, but that would not be this winter.— Cr Harley said the water was doing considerable damage to the compiainant's crops. — Cr Levien objected to any considerable expense being incnrred on a pnrely temporary work. — Raferred to the Works Committee to report next meeting of the Council. A letter was received from Mr G. Page asking permission to open up the original drain across Montreal road— Cr Graham saidjibe moment this was done the Council would find themselves involved in a lawsuit T?kh Mr Webster.- Cr Harley said this was a natu a" vaer course, and the Council should ioi allow themselves to be frightened br such threats from Cr Graham.— Cr Everett aid uot think the Council would be justified in allowing the water to be diverted on to Mr Webster's property without first ascertaining that this wan an original water course.— -Cr Graham said he conceived it to be his duty to warn the Council if he saw that they were likely to take such action as would involve them in expense.— Referred to the Surveyor to report upon A letter from Mr C. Jones calling attention ' to the fact that the late heavy rama had cut tip the road in Franklyn- street, owing to the water course being overgrown. The Surveyor was ordered to see to the matter. A letter, dated 23rd June, was received from Mr Thorns, of Brook-street Valley, reporting two casss of scarlet faver in his house. A letter was received from Mr Stanley eneiosin? a cheqne for the amount of his rates, *ni stating tta 1 hig house in Ngaflwa-street was n occupied, and that the road to it was in a very bad state. An application was received from residenti in fWaimea and Ngatitawa-streeta for gas mains to be laid on there, and promising to take the gas.— Oa the motion of Cr Graham, seconded by Cr Everett, it wa3 decided to accede to the request as soon as the material arrives from England. The Surveyor having stated that this extension would require all the pipes at present ordered, it was decided to order 500 more. The Works Committee recommended that a few cartloads of stuff be placed where asked for by Mr Burford. Agreed to. The Works Committee reported that they had visited the spot referred to by Mr Bunny re Mowatt's accident, acd, while regretting that it should have occurred, they did not consider it wa3 attributable to any negligence on the part of the Council, and cod8< quentiy recommended that the claim should not be entertained. Agreed to. — They also reported that Mr Fell, for the S.P.G , had consented to reduce the rate of interest oa the mortgage on the Council buildings to 7 per cent, and recommended that the offer be accepted. Agreed to. The City Surveyor in (his report stated Ibat owing to the accumulation of tar at the gesworks he would recommend that it be utilised ; for the manufacture of asphalt e slabs for laying and kerbing the footpath*. He further stated that several complaints had been made regarding the open ditch near the Postboy Hotel, and recommended the erection of & lamp at the corner of Vanguard and Gloucester-streets. The latter proposition was agreed to oa the motion of Cr Honnsell, seconded by Cr Little. Cr Graham proposed that that portion of the report regarding the asphalta nhould be referred to the Works Committee to report at the next meeting of the Council. Cr Little seconded the motion, and did so ■with great pleasure, bb he had been the first to bring the question of asphalting the paths before the Council. The Inspector of Nuisances reported that lfce nuisances had so largely decreased since bis firsc tour of inspection that he was compelled to make his report Tery brief for want of material. Cr Harley presented a petition from a number of residents in Col ling wood-street asking that a culvert or pipe drain be sabBtituted for the existing pipe drain. The Mayor stated that the work was a very desirable one, but at present he feared the funds would not permit of its being undertaken. The petition was ordered to lie on the table. Hacknpy carriage licenses were granted to Thoma3 Kelly and John Roberts. Cr Everett called attention to the state of the ditch in Victoria Road, which waa filled op. Referred to the Surveyor. Cr Graham called attention to a hole in the footpath near Mr Simpson's, in Washington Valley. Ordered to be repaired. The Council then sdpurned.
