The Lady Barkly leaves for Golden Bay at 5 o'clock to-night with tho 'Frisco mail. The Murray sailed for West Coast ports at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The Wallace arrived at Hokitika from Wanganui to-day, and left again for Greymouth. The Charles Edward reports a heavy sea and dangerous bar at Greymouth. She is unable to leave there for Westport to-day. The Kennedy, from Westport, is signalled. She returns to West Coast Ports at 6 p.m to-morrow. The Beautiful Star sailed for Westport at 7 o'clock last night. She loads there with coal for the South. The Penguin left Wellington at 1 o'clock this afternoon, will arrive here to-morrow morning, and sail by the same tide at noon for Taranaki and Manakau. The Hawea, with the .^an Francisco mail, left Onehunga at 845 a.m. on Tuesday, and arrived off Taranaki at 1115 p.m. aame day; landed mai s and passengers, and proceeded on to Wellington half an hour after midnight, and reached there at 325 p.m. yesterday; sailed at 6 pm., and arrived here at 7*30 a.m. to-day, entering the harbor an hoir later. She brought the Taranaki por lien of her ca>goon to tbia port, where it will he transhipped into the Penguin to-morrow. The Hawea sailed for Picton, Wellington, and Lyttelton by the same tide at 11 a m. A late London paper s»ys: — Regarding the loss of Her Majesty's ship Dotterel, we are informed by a gentleman who bad semiofficial relations with some of the South American States during tho recent war between Chili and Peru, that the Chilians put down a large Dumber of torpedoes in the neighbourhood of the Straits, wiih a view of intercepting any war vessels that, the Argentine Republic, which at one time it was thought would join the Peruvians, might despatch to the Pacific. It is considered very probable that the loss of th* 3 Dotterel is due to the accidental explosion of ono of these torpedoes. It has been resolved to send two vessels to Sandy Point to assist in the diviug operations
