CORRESPONDENCE.
To the Editor of thb "Evening Mail." Sir,— l see by your report in yesterday's paper of tbe proceedings against Mr Thomas Harley that Mrs Mercer in giving her evidence said I had been bought over by Harlej and that she could prove it. I was by order of the Court outside whilst Mrs Mercer was giving her evidence, dud this is the first opportunity I have had of conttadicting her statement. Will you, therefore, allow me to nay that it is absolutely false? I saw Mr Harley but once after Friday evening and that in company with his brother, and neither of them then nor at any other time, nor has any one else, said anything to me on such :i subject, My lawyer advises ffie that there is no legal remedy for such slander, so that my only course is to give the falsehood the lie through the public press.— l am, Sec, John Satiiebley. Waimea West, 17th June, 1881.
