PRECAUTIONS AGAINST SMALLPOX Wellington, Thursday night. The Government are making inquiries as to the extent of the outbreak of small pox at Sydney with the Yiew of ascertaining whether it is necessary to take any precautionary measures here. About 30 gentlemen met in the Parliamentary buildings this morning to consider how the export of meat, dairy produce, &c, b Ihe freezing process might be successfully established, tbe Hon Mr Waterhouse in the chair. The Hon Mr Johnston, and Messrs Bryce, Beetbam, Murray, and Capt. ltoasell were appointed a Committee of investigation and to report. Friday; The appointments of three agents under tbe Consolidated Stock Act, 1877, hare been revoked. In consequence of the smallpox in Sydney, tbe Government have, after considering | an offioial telegram from the Government of New South Wales, resolved to proclaim the City of Sydney and harbor of Port Jackson ail infected place. iNVEßCxnoirx, Friday. The first section of six milea of the Riverton to Orepuki line will be handed over to the Government this week. A meeting is to be held at Itiverton on Saturday to request the Government to press on the completion: to Orepuki. The Freemasons have arranged to erect a Hall which, with site, will cost nearly £2000. The foundation stone will be laid on St. John's day. An apprcntice named John Wbylee, sixteen years, old, was washed overboard from the Loch Doou ani drowned. The Auckland footballers at a meeting resolved to adopt the suggestions of the WelliDgton Club for the formation of an Intercolonial team A Committee waa appointed to carry out the proposal.
