We take the following (com tbe SanFrancit ico Journal of Commerce :•— lt is a grand feasible, and commendable sobecoe* — that of draining Lake Okeecbobee, in South Florida. Therefore we.hopo it is true, as reported, that a contract; has been agreed upon between the, Start e authorities and parties representing, capitalists in Poilapelphia and on the Pacific coast for that purpose. If this soheme saocaeds 12, 000,000 acres of tbe best sugar land io tbe world will be reclaimed. Tbe territory reclaimed will include the celebrated Everglades, and will be in extent twice oi large ai the Slate of New Jer&ey. This ia the largest contract ou the record, and when completed Florida can prod uoe more sugar than the United States now coaiume. Tbe reclaiming of this vast and inexhaustible fertile tract is sure to be effected sconer or later, bb we have before painted out. The fall from the lake to the ocean, and especially to the Gulf, is sufficient. Tbe sooner the work ia done the belter. When it- is done, if well done, the laod of flowers and orange, groves will proceed to the (rant rank of agricultural States, and become, conspicuous, for her products . of once, rice, and corn.
