MR OLIVER RESIGNS HIS PORTFOLIO. ! Wellington, Thursday night. At the Appeal Court to-day, the arguments ' in the Dunedin case of Maitland t>. Pritchard (in error)' were commenced. The plaintiff sued in the Court below as Commissioner of Crown Lands to recover from the defendant ' £500 damages for trespass on certain. Crown lands, and damages accruing by reason of such trespass. The defendant had entered into-a contract witb the; Queen for t ho formation of the Dunedin railway; station reclamation, and had insisted on removing certain material from the sand hills adjacent, although ordered not to do so by the Government Engineer and the plaiutiff. Two I questions were submittted f whether the defendant may be restricted under this contract from removing the sand, aridwhother under the contract the defendant was entitled to insist upon removing the.aand, notwithstand- j ing the prohibition. The Court below had decided thah the defendant could not be restricted and that the defendant was entitled j under the contract 'to,, remove the sand/ After hearing "part of the argument the Court adjourned till to-morrow. The time for shooting cock pheasants and Californiau quail in the Nelson district has been extended from the 16 th May to the 30th July, subject to certain restrictions in -the '•ACt.' .
