Chhistchurcii, Saturday. The barquo Thurso arrived from the Cape yesterday. She reports that the barque Bella arrived there on March 2nd. On the voyage she fell in with an iron barque called the India bound for South Australia with iron and machinery. She was in a sinking condition, having sprung a leak and the pumps breaking down. The captain and his wife and crew, numbering 17, were taken on .board the Bella, and the barque was abandoned • Mr Andrews addressed his constituents last night. He was i» largr^of fcuiiatic
Asylums being placed under the supervision of local bodies, and believed the Government inspection of such institutions was a sham. He would follow Sir Gecrge Grey. He favored tho continuation of tho present educational system, and waa opposed to Bible reading in schools, A vote oi : confidence- was passed.
The news of the drowning of the passengers per Tararua lias caused a profound sensation here, as several highly respected citizens were on board, some of them being en route to England.
Early this morning a grocer's shop and bouse belonging to A. J. Ilulme was partially destroyed by fire. Mrs I-lulme and the children escaped in their night dresses. The furniture and stock were totally destroyed, and the building was gutted. The total loss is about c£lloo. The insurances are: — Victoria £400; Standard £300; South Biitish £600 ; Traueatlantic £200. The origin of the fire is unknown.
Napier, Saturday, The Herald is in a position to state that the Government proposes to establish a parcels delivery system throughout the colony. It will be limited to packages 14lbs in weight. The present propoial is to make a uniform charge irrespectira of distance, the object heing to facilitate the carriage of small parcels, especially between places unconnected by rail. Invercaroill, Saturday. A little girl, aged one and a half years, daughter of Reid, a rabbitter, was run over by the train at Dipton last evening and killed.
When performing at the Theatre Royal last evening " Zelln," the gymnast, formerly of Chiarini's circus, fell from the ring trapeze, a distance of 15 feet, landing oa the seats in fcho pit. She was severely shaken but was able to appear again immediately, after which she was talon to her lodgings. She was out of practice and had been advised not to appear. The body of the child run over by the engine on the northern line last night, was literally cut in two.
The police have been despatched to the scene of the wreck of the Tararua.
CiuiaKSTON. Saturday. The case of Costello v. Croninville miners was decided yesterday by the assessors. Intense interest was taken by everyone in the district ia the verdict, which was a nousuit for tha plaintiff with costs £22. Notice of appeal was given. Mr Fisher, the plaintiff's solicitor, and a member of the House, was received with groans after the decision, and three cheers were given for tho defendant's counsel, Mr Hiaelden, also for the assessors.
TiiiAßtr, Saturday. On the second day of the races the weather was wet and miserable, and the attendance only half as large as on Thursday. There was very little bettiug. South Canterbury Handicap: Lima 1, Lady Emma 2, Joker 3 Hurdles: Winifred 1, Sailor Boy 2, Agent 3.

Wellington, Saturday. Ilearn has received a communication fiom Albert White of Mercury Bay Bgreeing to row him for £100 a side and the championship, and proposing that the course be 3£ miles, straight, the race to be rowed in Wellington on Monday the 25th July, the first deposit to be made at Auckland on the 15 ih May. Hearn sugges! s tbat the race be rowed within six weeks and take place on a Saturday afternoon instead of a Monday. He, however, will agree to While's terui3 if the latter insists on them.
New Plymouth, Saturday. Mr Rawßon, '.R.M,, met with an accident last uight. He was manufacturing some hydrogen gas for a lecture when some sulphuric acid spurted into his right eye. The Duke of Manchester arrived here last night. He visits Waitara to-day and leaves by the Penguin for Auckland this afternoon.
Wangandi, Saturday. The next meeting of the Trotting Association is fixed for the 24th June. Prizes to the value of £130 are offered. Nominations for the Wangaaui Handicap Steeplechase close oa Monday the 2nd of May at 7 p.m.
Duneihn, Saturday. The census shows the population of Duuedin city to bo 12182 males and 32671 females, against 11599 males and 1092G females in 1878.
Tho Bank of New Zealand had £4000 worth of old silver in the Tararua insured in a Melbourne office.
