The barque Glimpse (s^aya the Auckland Star) has loaf ltd at the Hay of Islands with coal for Honolulu. There is no reason why our mines should not compote for a share of the California trade Our Melbourne telegrams cf the last few days have infoimed us of the seizure of the steamer ludia alias Ferret for sailing Tinder a fiils(>. register. From a Glasgow paper we gather a few parliculars of this vessel. About the middle of October last H gentleman giving the name of Walker called on a leading firm of ship store merchants in Glasgow, representing that he waa acting aa broker for a gentleman of means who was going on a long yachting cruise, and
desired to favor the firm with the contract - for the provisioning of the vessel. The goods
were therefore supplied, including a large Bt Jck of the highest class of wines from Lonc'on. The vessel, which turned out to be the Ferret, was then lying at Giec-nock undergoing an overhaul. Having completed their task of providing for the six months'
-hunger and thirst of the yachtsmen tbe merchants presented their bill amounting to £1490. To liquidate his account Mr Walker gave bis acceptance at three months' date, but ere tbe bill matured on the 16th January la9t some information came to the ears of the merchants tending to make them a little uneasy about their claim. Inquiries were at once set on foot as to the whereabouts of the Ferret. When she left the Clyde she was taken rouud to Cardiff by a crew of runners, who then left her — the only ones standing by being the captain and engineers. At this port she Bbipped a fresh crew, and started on her •cruise. Not being able to ascertain where the vessel had Bailed for the merchants applied to the. Highland Railway Company from whom the vessel had been chartered. The reply was that they had beeu endeavoring to trace the Ferret, but without success, and had communicated with Lloyds' agents and the British Consuls all over the world. Nothing more was heard of the Ferret until she turned up at Melbourne the other day. She is a screw steamer 1 70 ft. 6in. long, 23ft. broad, and 12ft. Gin. deep, having a gross measurement of 347 tons She is f.tted with compound inverted engines of 90 h.p. baviug two cyliuders of 23 inches and 40 inches diameter. The accounts left unpaid by her at Glasgow amount to over £2000.
