The Government have accepted two tenders for the supply of cement of New Zealand manufacture, each for 100 tons. The 12th and 14th May have been appointed the days on which the Property Tax instalments shall bo paid by the Insurance Companies. The Hon. A patient named Johnston Kirk escaped yesterday from the Lunatic Asylum. Heavy rain fell yesterday and continuing to-day. It ia very welcome to the farmers.

Dcnedin, Friday. Mr James Fulton, M.H.R. for Taieri, addressed his constituents at Mosgiel last night. There was a good attendance and he was well received. He spoke generally in snpport of the policy of the present Government and advocated the property tax, the ex. eruption being brought down to £100. Ho rect ired a vote of confidence.

When arrested he confessed to having committed the deed, saying " 1 stabbed the girl through love. Ross caused me to do it," The reasonable inference from these words is that he and Ross were rival suitors, and, possibly thinking Ross more favored, and prompted by jealousy, he madly wreaked his vengeance on the object of his affections, which was no sooner done than hi relented, for he was found quietj mild, *nd submissive, feeding her like a baby.
