Wellington, Tuesday, The property tax payments to the 9th : April are:— £ Auckland . ... ... 36,086 Hawke's Bay ... ... 15,231 Wellington ... ... .40,014 Nelson... ,;. : -- ... 12,000 Canterbury.; ... ; ..* ... 60,933 Waitaki ... ... 12,841 Otago. ... ... ... 53,174 Southland ... ... 8,695 Total ... . ... 238^74 •• At the Supreme Court Edwin Tobjn, charged with larceny from the person, was sentenced to twelve months with bard labor. • William Michael Dowhes charged with feloniously removing stamps from certain deeds with intent to use such again, was acquitted on one indictment. There were six indictments against the prisoner charging him with offences of a similar nature, but the Grand Jury found no bills on tbreo indictments and:ou the fourth he was acquitted. Two charges yet remain to be tried. At the conclusion of their business, the Grand Juiry handed in the following presentment:—". The Grand Jury present that the evidence' brought before tbem in the cases of the Queen v. Downes discloses an utter want of system and great carelessness in connection with the custody of valuable public documents in charge of the Land Transfer and Registrar of Deeds Department. Auckland, Monday. A little boy, son of J. K. McDonald Government Insurance ag.nt at Hamilton, fell into tbe Waikato River and was drowned. Two young children, who fell from different : wharves in Auckland harbor on Saturday, were rescued by the bystanders jumping in. ! At the half-yearly meeting of the South: British Insurance Company to-day , ; the report showed tho income from fire ahd marine premiums to be £65,872, and frpm interest, transfer fees, &c, £5185 ; total, £71,057, which, added to £11,971 brought forward from the previous half-year, makes a total of 1.83,029. The totai expenditure has beeu :— Fire and marine losses paid and outstanding at tbe clotje of the boofes,
£32 830 ; re-insurances, £14,288 ; agents 1 ceminJßßicns, satories, rents, &c, £13;461 ; advertising and printing, and stationery, £794 ; Underwriters Association and Eire Brigades, £597 ; Government licenses, £426 ; making a total of £G2,29G, with £5000 dividend paid, £67,396, leaving a balance of £15,633 at credit of the profit and lobs account, from which the directors reccmmend tho payment of a dividend of 10 per cent, payable at the head office of the Company on the 12th April, aud atthe tranches ou receipt of advices. CH_.rs_-CH-R.cir, Tuesday. A man named Dawdle met with an accident whilst rabbit shooting and died after amputation of the foot. At a meeting of tho promoters of tho Caswell Sound Marble Company, Mr Mcßae. the Chairman, stated th.t 2000 shares had been sold ai.d he believed that £2500 would be sufficient to developo the enterprise. Mr Pan is, the Civil Commissioner, contradicts the statement that any contagious dis ease is prevailing at Parihaka, and says that the statement about sixty draths is incorrect. CAR.KivboN, Tuesday. Messrs Blinny ftnd iieethaiii addressed a fairly well attended meeting of their con--Btitueni s ;:in the Town HaU last night. M r Bunny advocated a property and income tax and duties on luxuries only. He would reduce the education vote by £100,000 and make those who desired to go above the 4 h Standard pay. He oouderuncd ' the tail way management and advocated giving. discretionary powers to the managers. He entirely supported Mr Bryce's actiou and tliodght it would have (settled the Native difficulty in a week. He was adverse to tbe County system, and thought a modified form of Provincialism would have to be resorted to. He advocated a loan of a million for roads aud bridges in the country districts. He would support the present Goveibtnent, which had the confidence of the country. He hoped tho Government would only bting down a few Bills and that they would stick to them like men. He supported the Wel-lington-Foxton railway. Mr Btetham next spoke, agreeing witb most of Mr Bunny's remarks ou education (except that he would give free education only to the third standard) customs duties, railway management, &c, but dfsttgfeed with him aa to Mr Bryce 8 action as it would have involved a costly war. He . saw no fault with the County ayitam except tho want of funds. Next session they would find that free trade and protection would crop up, but he would voto for free trade. A vote bf thanks to both aie__.b__B was passed. Dunkdin, Tuesday. At the Supreme Court Joseph Gard was convicted of sheep stealing. Mr Stout moves for arrest of judgment on the ground of the improper admission of certain statements.
