CAPE NEWS.

[Per Orient Steamer Cuzco.] Cape Tctwn, January, 20. Daring the last fortnight success has attended the operations of the colonial forces on the Transkein rerritory 0 "Wherever the rebels attempted to make a stand they have been very roughly handled by the military chiefs, who have gained positions enabling them to play into one another's bands, with the result that a large number of Bheep and cattle have changed owners, and the war in that portion of the country has virtually ended. Lately it wsb rumored that the Pondoese occupying the country between TJmbala and the northern portion of Natal, were rising and marching on Kokatad. It has now been shown that the rising was only igainst an Xesibo tribe, and already they have suii'ered severely for it. t*o confident are the authorities that there is no danger in that quarter, that some troops who had been doing duty in the Transkei, left for Basutoland, and others are Bbortly to follow. In the early portion of last week Umditchova, one of the Pondoese chiefs, surrendered to a party of volunteer?, and was forwarded to King William's Town. Four hundred Tembris lately in rebellion have been sentenced to work for twelve months at the d ; amond mines at Kimberly for half-a-crown a day. On the 14th insfc. a severe engagement occurred bstween a column commanded by Colotel Brobant, numbering 1000 men, and a rebel force of over 4000 Basutos. The engagement lasted for four hours, when the rebels were beaten from every position they attempted to. occupy, and retired to their villages. Our losses were twenty killed and as many wounded. Among the latter wob Dr M'liae, the only medical man in the field, who, though badly wounded early in the engagement, heroically attended the other sufferers. It is stated that Brigadier- General Clarke will leave the head quarters, King "Will'atn's Towd, almost immediately for Baautoland, when the force will be strengthened there, and an effective blow be sTack at the rebellion.
