STAR C.C. V. NELSON C.C.
This match* which has been looked forward to with considerable interest for some time by both Clubs; was played in Victory Square on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in a win for the Nelson Club by 89 runs on the first innings. Messrs Wigzell and Firth captained the respective Clubs, and the former winning the toss decided to handle the willow. J. Fayen and Hood were the first to appear at the wickets to the bowling of Firth and Lawry. The latter soon difa posed of Hood, and Hale took his place. Both bitsrhen played good, cricket,- and ran the ficore to 3t) before Palmer dismissed Hale, who flayed well for 19*. The remaining batsmen did very little beyond Fayen, Who baited fcteadily for 20, and saw 8 wickets down before giving a cbance to Naylor, which was accepted. The innings closed for a total of CS. The players now assembled, and Mr Philip Topliss, the Hob. Secretary of the Nelson Cricket Citify presented the prizes Mibscribed for by the public in connection with the late match Australians v. n*l£Z t In *>\Dg^o he spoke warmly of the admirable balling shown by Mr S. Fowler, and also complimented Messrs G. Fowler and I) Burns very highly on their excellent bowliDg, fts it wa» proved to be by the analysis^ and Mr Halliday for his splend'd longstopping, and he only hoped that they would cont Due to win fresh laurels in both club and country matdhes for, tho honor of Nelson. Cheers were then called for the receipents, and also for Mr Toplifls, and heartily given by the players and spectators. The Star playera now tbok the field, and Messrs Firth aud Naylor represented the Nelson Club at the wickets to the bowliDg of Messrs Wigzel! and Bolton. Wilh the score at 5 Naylorwas cleau bowled by Bolton, and Balmain took his place Splendid cricket was now Bhown, both batsmen playing with confidence, and they carried the score to 56, when Balmain was bowled by a trimmer from Wigzell. Halliday took his place, and agaii. a stand vras made, the score being carried to 91 when Firth was well caught by J. Wig zell off a lumpy ball, having played a grand innings for 45. Lawry was the next player. At 104 Halliday succumbed to Wigzell who vraa bowling capitally. Lawry and Askew now gav.e the fie,ld Borne hard work, both hitting freely nnd running sharp runs, anci 150 went up, when Askew wai well takeu bj Male. The remaining batsmen did very little towards advancing the score, which was run up to 152, Lawry being not out for a verj pretty 20, hia leg hitting being nicely timed When time was called the Star Club had lost two wickets in their second innings for 85 runs.
