Donald, a respectable young man, pleaded guilty to th« embezzlement of money belonging to bis employers, Messrs Bannatyne & Co, and was sentenced to twelve months with hard labor. Napier, Monday. The body of a man found in a creek near Pohue haa been identified as that of Dennis O'Brien, who waa recently working at the Mobaka gold fields. Kennedy's surveying instruments, recently taken by Renati's people, have been returned. Chribtchduoh, Monday. G. Dunsford, C. Dodson, E. Boulton, and J. Grierson, stroke, have been selected to represent Canterbury in the rowing match with Otago on February 28. A contract for £12,000 hag been accepted for the construction of ft railway from Christchurch to Sumner. A seaman belonging to the Bbip Pleiades while drunk had r narrow escape from being drowned on Saturday night. He was rescued by Captain Satten. Dukbdik, Monday. Grip and Virginia Water are scratched for all their engagements. But little work was done at Forbury yesterday. Chaafe commenced operations by sending Atlantic and Nautilus for a canter once round, Boughleen Dhoun and Hippona at the same time doing walking exercise. Cutts had his string out and sent Sir Modred with clothing on twice round at a moderate pace. The Idalium colt and Comus were despatched for a two miles Bpin finishing fast. Hilarioiiß and Sir Garnet, the latter in clothing, had a pipe opener twice round and pulled up very fresh. Le Loup cantered half a mile by himself. Sylvanus and Playboy had a regular duater, the colt having all the beit of it. The Cat trotted three miles in grand form. Milo and a three-year-old of Mr Dodson's bad a sharp spin of two miles. The former appeared to be going rather gingerly, but could still hold hia companion cheap. Fishhook looks the very picture of health. He only cantered, but apparently retains sufficient of hia old form to make it warm for some of the highflyers. Lady Emma and Legerdemain did walking exercise, as also Mr Dodson's lot. The cup candidates are breaking down rignt and left. Sir Medred continues to harden in price, while quotations about others are still asked for, and also Bhorteu considerably. Volunteer, who was under a cloud for a week or two, was in demand on Saturday, but in the evening receded again,
and bis stable companion, Randwick, passed him in the betting for the Champion. Randwick passed him, too, in the betting for tho Champagne Stakes. Nothing at present goes down except Idaluim and Amulet, but doubles and trebles ara indulged in at priceß rarjging from 1000 to 100 to 1.
