To" THE EDITOR OF TUB " EVENING MAIL." * Sir— l notice (njbur issue of February sth a letter signed " Nejson," in which the writer informs your readers how properties in Mr Patlie>'a district . ar^jnef-valusd. He says the value to rent being 's'thall the freehold has .generally been valued, and the ciittom has been to charge 3 "per cent on tho value of the-land, and than.to value every building, upon .the land, charging that, with 10 per cent, and the aggregate is called the rental. Now,' Sir, as valuator for the Mofueka High-" way/Board for the last two years- 1 have had to: Value what "Nelson" terms Mr Puttie's district, and have to state that he ("Nelson") is quite mistaken ,- such not having been my mode of making the valuation, and I quite agree with him that buildings (except those uaed as places of. business, and perhaps in a few other cases) ought not to be valued at a higher rate than the land. I think " Nelson" is also wrong when he states there is a tendency in all official valuators to value high. If this were so how is it that there are so very few objections ?— I am, &c, . . H. A. Tarrabt, '•-••• Valuator MotuekaHighway Board. • Lower Moutere, Feb. 7, 1881.
