NELSON INSTITUTE.
To the Editor of the " Evening Mail." Siii-The remurks of your correspondent in Tuesday's issue, regarding the lithographic stone discovered by Mr Jonathan Brough and presented to the Nelson Museum Committee, " who came to tho conclusion that it was a curiosity of no importance," shows very clearly that the members of tho Institute should take more interest in the matter, and place men on the Committee of management who would really wotk for tho good of the members and the community iv general. It would entail, I presume, too much loss of dignity on tho part of the learned individuals composing that boiy to submit any specimen, the nature of which was foreign to them, to judges whose opinion might be valuable, instead of shelving os a " curiosity of no valua " the sample of one of the most useful stones extaur. As a member of the Institute I certainly think that a complete change of the Corumittco would be advisable, considering that most of the present men have been iv office for years, some over a quarter of n century, and there can be no doubt that more energetic mcii would make it a really flourishing concern. The partial change last year has caused a small improvement in the state of affairs, and this yc-ar I hope to see a still greater alteration in the personal of the Committee, and then may we hope to see this most useful Society wake up from its long hti\te of coma and become a popular ai.d instructive institution.—l am, &c, Subscribe^.
