Mr Gladstone has taken up a threatening attitude towards the party of obstructives in the House of Commons. He seconded l£r Justin McCarthy's amendment to the address in reply sarcastically, remarking that Parliament was not a debating society, and ha characterised the amendment aB an insult to the Tbrone. Mr Parnell made o speech in which he vaunted the power of the Irish Land League. France denies that Greece has any right to take action in reference to her dispute with the Powers. The militia barracks at Edinburgh have been burnt down. There is uo doubt that it was the work of an incendiary, and is suspected to be part of the Fenian scheme to destroy the military barracks and arsenals. The Southport and Weßt Lancashire Bank (Limited) has stopped payment. Jan. 25. The Bill providing for coercive measures in Ireland was introduced by the Irish Secretary in the House of Commons to-day. The powers which it proposes to give the Viceroy are, to issue warrants for the arrest and detention of suspected persons and persons guilty of treasonable convict. It will hold good until October 1882. Dr Lyons, the member for Dublin, has given notice of an amendment on the measure, requiringjthe Government to carry out reforms in Ireland before pursuing a policy of coercion. In tbe course of a speech made in the House to-day, Sir Stafford Northcote, referring to the remarks made by the Secretary for Ireland in introducing his bill, said that Mr Forster's facts were sadly convincing of ths necessity for immediate stringent measures in regard to Ireland. Mr Gladstone has recovered from his recent indiapoaitiou and has been able to attend a Cabinet Council. A circular issued by the Turkish Government warns the Powers that the Greek armaments are calculated to endanger the peace and suggests that Turkey in conjunction with the Powers should enter into negotiations with a view to determining the frontier line between Greece and Turkey. Severe fighting has again taken place between tue Basutus and the Colonial forces at Mufeti-ug. The rebels were defeated. Earl Kimberley replying to a deputation from the Peace Society said if the Boers desisted from present hostilities the settle ment of the Transvaal difficulty knight be possible. The Boer* are pushing on to Christina, a township in the eastern portion of Tranvaal. Mr Gladstone receiving a deputation in reference to the present state of affairs in Ireland) assured them that he believed that the measures which the Government proposed to submit to Parliament for the pacification and improvement of the condition of the people would be fonnd effective.
