Napikr, Friday. Hurdle Race: Lomond, 1; Matau, 2; Jtawenata, 3. Club Handicap: Libeller, 1; Merlin, 2. A grand race. District Plate: Mavis, 1; Matau, 2; Primrose, 3. Hailstorm was the favorite at even money, but was beaten at half the distance. Mavis won by a neck. A protest was entered against Angler, the winner of the Ladies' Purse, on the ground that the rider is a professional jockey. The owner and jockey of a horse engaged in the Hack Hurdle Race were disqualified under peculiar circumstances. The owner backed him in the totalisator, and on learning that the money was to be paid to the first past the post he then instructed the boy who rode him to run across the course, so as to get in first. The totalisator man refused to pay, [ which led to an investigation, wueu the boy stated his instructions. Wellington, Friday. A public meeting of persons interested in forming a Joint Stock Company for the purpose of constructing the West Coast railway was held yesterday afternoon. The Committee appointed at the previous meeting reported that it would be necessary to raise £50,000 locally before floating a Company could be hoped for, nnd that from the partial canvasß made they had every reason to believe that amount could be raised without difficulty. A very large nnd influential provisional directory, comprising the leading mereh. Nfs, professional men, and members representing the district was appointed with a view to floating the Company. The prospectus is to be issued wheu £50,000 are raised. It has been decided that Mr Bolleßton ib to take permanent charge of the Native and Defence Departments. He will retain his other appointments until the vacancy in the Ministry is filled up, when he will be relieved of one of them. . ' Christchobch, Friday. Yesterday Mr P. C. Threlkeld shipped 90 choice ramn and three bulls to Napier per Bingarooma. The City assessment for the current year amounts to £223,694.
