Capt. Edwin wired the following "urgent" warning at 11*20 this morning : — " Bad wea tber approaching ; any direction between north and weßt and pnuth west. Gloss will fall four- ten'hs, and fall fast and soon " The Kennedy leaves Wellington at four o'clock to-morrow morning for Nelson via Picton The Wallnce and Charles Edward are both detained a« HokHika to day by bad weather and unworkable bar. The Patea, with a full cargo, sailed for Pnfea direct at 6 o'clock last, nHht The Ocean Bird arrived from Lyttelton last night. The Croydon Lass, bound northwards, was sighted by the Hawea in the Straits yesterday. Her master wished to be reported. The Hawea sailed for Taranaki and Manukau by the same tide at 40 minutes past noon. The Murray arrived from Wanganui a< 6*15 this morning. The fortieth annual report of the Peninsular and Oriental Steflm Navigation Company has been issued. It states that the net profit of the past year inolud ng £4308 brought, forward. wns£l49 862. out of whic^ an interim dividend of 2 per cent was paid. A further dividend of 3 Der cent is now proposed, which will make 5 per cent, for the year, and leave £4862 to be enrried forward. Particulars are given of no fewer than eight new steamers which are being built tor *.hf company wifh all the latest improvements A numher of the old ships are being repaired and adapted to modern requirements, and the directors take the credit to themselves, that amid f.ll these costly additions and changes, they have been able to p«y off al most the whole debenture debt. The receipts of the company were £592 768 for passengers, and £975,286 for freights during the year. Mail contracts brought in £484,764. There are, however, several adjustments to make, such as £57,430 for loss by exchange, and £19,026 credit balance of iritereat and discount account, bo that the total actual income was £2,014 3H. The total outgoings of the year amounted to about £1.869,000. So enormous an outlnv incurred to earn a net revenue of but £145,000 or so appears to justify the complaints of the directors about the keen ' character of the competition to which the company is subjected, and the consequent; low ness of freights. Revenue has fallen off, they say, not less than £240,000 in the. last two years, but in the year now closed the receipts were better by £180,000 than in the previous year.
