CORRESPONDENCE.
To THE EdTOU OS 1 TUB "EVENING MAIL." Sie,— Will you kindly allow me a small space in your valuablo paper to inquire into the matter of the handicap for one of the events to be competed for on New Year's Day. In the first place I should like to know who this Mr Askew is that he should hare to start at scratch for the three distances, viz., 100,200, and 300 yards, and give the other competitors buco enormous starts, and who are the handicftppers who hare thus wisely shown their great ability in the matter. In my humble opinion it looks as if they had decided that Aekew should not start for the race, or at least have no Bhow of coming to the front at all. To give two men 6 yards start in 100 yards, one man 9 yards in 200, and oDe man 12 yards in 300 yards seems to me to be out of all reason (that is if the competitors are any runners whatever). If the handicappers consider Askew the cbampiou of the Australian colonies then the deciaiou is just, but upon enquiring I find that Askew is nothing more than a local amateur, and quite incupable of giving the competitors such starts. By handicapping iu such a manner Nelson is deprived of a visit from the other Provinces of many competitor By inserting the above you will oblige Your?, &c , Enquikeu. Nelson, December 30, 1880,
