BISHOP'S SCHOOL.
The prizes were distributed on Saturday morning. In opening the proceedings the Bishop of Nelson said : — This is the Inst time We shall meet in this school as it how is. A few years ago it seemed as if ihb sebool Would cease ; bnt it has now revived, and it seems evident that there is heed for ifc. Without any extraneous, aid, ancl without anj' endowments, it has gradually risen, and therefore 1 have determined on improving 1 its condition. It may be expected that with improved premises its numbers will still further increase, and'this will justify an increase in thc teaching staff. It will thus be more worthy of the name it bears, and take its former position amongst the educational attractions of Nelson. Great credit is due to the present master, and it is owing to thc coniidence felt in bin. that the school has progressed. The books used will be those approved by the authorities of the College, so that in thc case of those who wish to pursue their classical studies no time will have been lost. The object of the institution is moreover to secure a useful commercial education with some degree of culture combined with it.
Mr. Harkness, the master, then read the following REi?OitT; MY __oitD,<— The l'eporfc for the past yearwill contain merely the average attendance and marks -foi* tjie I aih glad to be able to sa.y that the rmmber bh the i'bll has increased during the year from IS — as reported at last examination — to 28. One boy has left during the year. The attendance this year shows a slight improvement over that of last year, the average being 87^ 'per cent., as compared with 86. So far as our year's work ia concerned ohi' daily register of marks shows that some of the boys have far exceeded others in regularity and excellence bf Work, and these tnarks have been tiken into account at tnis examination. I would especially wish to commend Black, Rowse, Hale, and Gibbs in the first division, and Levien, Milner, Green iii, Morton, and Baigent in the second division, for English. In Arithmetic — Black, Gibbs, Hale, Walker i, Levien, Milner, Morton, and Harley iii have done the best ; while for Scripture, Black. Levien, Gibbs, Green, Milner, Rowse, and Mackay are Avorthy of praise. I cannot better conclude this ghol't report than by sayliig that during the whole year I have not had one single complaint against any of the boys for their behaviour out of school hours. In school of course we have had our little troubles, but thc absence of any such complaint is, I think, eminently satisfactory. — James H. Habkness.
