TO THE CITY COUNCILLORS.

[Per favor of the editor of the Evening Mail j The reply Mr Harley gave to the meeting tho other day in answer to the qu' stion " Do you believe in /5s a day h was " It is a delicate question," and it prOvfrd thafc he was right for once, because the people as a rule will never agree to a reduction in auything. Now* in the present state of the f unda belonging to the Council it is clear enough that reductions must take place, bo uo delay need bo made in copying the General Government. They have engaged their men ou all fche railways at 6s a day with ten per cent reduction, and 4s a day for roving Arabs. Now, just look at the tenders sent into your last meeting ; you can take them aa a general rule for all afc say 4s per day. Then look at the Inspector of Nuisances ; he takea hia pay for work never performed, for instance, the loss in dog tickets and waste of water is as much as bis pay for that work.. Then there is Mr Lightfoot ; he imbibes too much of Mr Webb's opinions.. There ought to be a atranger in his place. Now, in commencing a reduction, you are bound to consider, not the men, but what you can get the work done for ; you are bound to consider the future aa well as the present. Therefore I beg to auggest the fallowing reductions : —First give all the carters a chance to do any gravelling that may ho required. Then contract for all small jobs that are passable. Then begin at the gas worka, say 9a per day ; then to the reservoir-keeper at the water works, say £2 per week and rent free ; then the draymen, say £2 per week ; then Mr Flett, take away from him the Inspectorship of Nuisance and give it to an old ratepayer, and compel him to make a report to the Council every month; ar.d then every travelling Arab that seeks employment, give him 49 per day, I am, &c, Anti-Radical.
