MOTUEKA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

To the Editor op the "Evening. Mail." Sir, — I see the Motueka people have had a . very successful Horticultural Exhibition. This is a move in tbe right direction and deserves to be encouraged and supported by everyone who bas the interest of the district , at heart, as not only does it tend to improve the cultivation of flowers, fruit, and vegetables, but it creates a pleasant occupation for the young ladies and gives tbem a taste for the beautiful. lam exceedingly pleased that tbe efforts of the Society were rewarded with undoubted success, and I hope the Nelson people will lend a helping hand, not only by attending the Exhibitions but by exhibiting also. I see tbat one of the Nelßon gardeners, Mr Budden, did kindly lend a helping hand by exhibiting very beautiful plants, but not of course for competition. Another Nelson gardener helped in another direction, that is, he helped to take away the prizes from the country amateurs. This latter kind of help is not calculated to do a young society much good, and I feel sure, on reflection, it will not be repeated. I have no doubt the Motueka Society will be pleased to welcome amateur competitors from other districts but it is hardly fair to expect that they can yet successfully compete against gardeners. If tbe gardeners wish this young Society success, and for their own sakes they should do so, let them encourage them by. exhibits without competition.— l am, &c, FtfCUSIA. FOLGENS.
