CORRESPONDENCE.

To thb Editor or the " Evening Mail." Sir—- At the last meeting of the City Council Cr Trask produced telegrams showing tbat gas, managers in other provinces bad tbeir gas free of expense, and in some caseu coal as well, and who disputed the assertion? But Mr Trask and other; Councillors seem to have lost sight of tho fact that since the purchase of the house for the gas manager | adjoining the works that house has been abundantly supplied with water, gas, and coal free of cost to the consumer, and of j which Mr Mirfin availed himself so long as he held the ofiice of manager; but if Mr i Lightfoot prefers residing in the suburbs over a mile distant from the works, is it economy, or is it fair play on the part of tbe ratepayers for the Council to countenance the laying on of a special service to this bis residence, and that, too, at a reduced rate ? And can Cr Trask cite an instance of like generosity prevailing in aDy other town in New Zealand? Councillor Harley spoke of leakage and condensation, which I suppose to mean the quantity of gas lost on account of the distance! from the works, where'probably it would take 1200 feet to register 1000 on the meter at the distance in question. — I am, &c, Watchman. ! December 4, 1880. To the Editor; of thb "Evening Mail.' • Sir— Can you inform me whose duty it is to cleanse the " Via ■ Dolorosa" leading from Trafalgar-street to Christ Church ? The present grass grown condition affords painful evidence of the apparent fitness of the cognomen with which we have been favored ofi 1 f "sSleept Hollow." j ; Nelson, 6th Deo., 1880. COLLEGE EOR GIRLS. To the Editor or the "Evening Mail." Sir— -We have in Nelson a College for boys,: of which we ore' justly proud, also a Theological College^ started, I presume," with the view-of supplying ministers ; to Ifill the. vacant cures ih the diocese, and so avoid the necessity of sending all the way to JJogfond

■ for such a purpose, but we have one great want in the educational line, and tbat is a College for girls. If our energetic Bishop would only take tbe matter in hand, assisted by others who would no doubt be both willing and able to assist him,T feel sure he would meet with success, and so earn the gratitude of parents who are either unable or unwilling to send their daughters elsewhere to obtain that higher education which they are so anxious to procure for them. By this means also this place would be made more attractive as a residence for those from outside who would be attracted by tho salubrity of our climate to take up their abode among us, but who might be. detetred from doing so by the want to which lam drawing attention. And ifc is clearly to our interest to encourage an accession of population of the kind indicated, as it is quite evident the commerce of Nelson is incapable of much further expansion. — I am, &c, Mates.

The value of the Melbourne Cup this year was £1785, Moody and Sankey are « reviving " the Mormons. Crowded meetings are being held in Salt Lake City, but the number of deserters from the Joe Smith revelation is not stated. A man named M'Pherson bas obtained jE^OO damages from the Borough of Bathurst on account of injuries received through the muuicipal authorities neglecting to keep a street in repair. A contemporary offers the following memo, for New Zealand politicians of all parties. Hotnd papei-s state thafc Mr Gladstone's " nice scruples " led him to positively re fuse to go to sea in the Admiralty yacht Enchantress, as he does not approve of public goods beiDg tised for prlriate service. A gentleman in Melbourne, whose wife and little daughter are now in England, recently received, per phonograph from London, a verse of "Home, Bweet home," sung by both of them, and followed by several kindly messages and kisses. D. A. Jones, of Boston, Ontario, has over 1000 swarms of bees actively at work, and can safely be ptonotinced the " Bee King " of the world. This is tbe manner in which a Canterbttry contemporary acknowledges the receipt of copies of a new paper :—" And yet another one I— We bave received a couple of issues of the Kaikoura Star. The doors of our lunatic asylums are cfuite wide enough to admit a few more people." Our contemporary evidently thinks there are eaoflgh papers in New Zealand Following in the wake of several colonial libraries tbe directors of the Edinburgh Philosophical Institution have ordered the removal of Ouida's novels from the shelves of their library. The G. R. Argus of Saturday Bays i— The old Maori Chief, Tainui, will be buried at two o'clock to-morrow in the Maori Cave in the Hmeßtone rock, at the head of Mawhera Quay. The body ia enclosed in a zinc coffin witb a glass face, through wbich the old warrior can be seen. Tainui was nearly eighty years of age and might be regarded as the last of the purely Maori race on the West Coast. Considerable shipments of flax are being made from Wanganui to Melbourne. The Otago settlers hare started a shilling subscription for the purpose of purchasing and presenting a testimonial to Sir Francis Dillon Bell prior to his departure for England. Messrß Fisher and Co., of Auckland, had the contract for supplying 100 shins of beef per day to tbe Circus Company. The following is from the last issue of the Mount Ida Chronicle: — '* Ifc is asserted in town to-day, on what is considered good authority, that Ah Lee bad killed a sheep at Macnamara's within a fortnight of the murder, and thafc ifc was then observed that his trousers had been stained with blood. If such had been the case, evidence of this nature should have been volunteered when enquiries were being made, and it is a matter of regret that ifc should hare been withheld, and better far at the present time had it never been made public." " Aeraodeus," in the N.Z. Mail says:— l can relate a pleasant little episode is the life of a henpecked husband, only it was dashed by a toupcon of regret that the affair did not come off properly. He was a long-suffering man, and a worthy fellow to boot; stood high in the estimation of his fellow men, and had served hia country in a civil capacity. But he made the mistake, in bis declining years, of marrying of a downright termagant, who kept hira in perpetual hot water. The measure of the awe tbat he stood in relative to tbat woman is correctly estimated by what followed on a certain occasion. He left hi 3 home for a time in pursuit of business, and whilst sojourning at a neighboring town was accosted one day by an acquaintance as foi* lows:— "Why H ; this is. dreadful intelligence; have you not beard tbat Mrs H. was attacked yesterday by a wbite bull, and only escaped a horrid death by the merest chance." I am assured the face of the nearly bereaved husband was a study as this intelligence waa imparted to him. At first ifc beamed t all over with excited hope, and fell to the zero of disappointment at the result, and thusly spoke he— " Attacked by a bull, do you say l Dear me, what a plucky beast he was to be sure. I have long labored under the impression that a herd of bisons would have avoided that woman." And then he wrung his friend's hand and sorrowfully turned away. Special attention is called' to the pricelist of the Rodanow Manufacturing Co., of Boston, U.S.A., published in these columns. AU those wishing to secure an excellent and correct timekeeper are recommended to address themselves to tbis old and reliable firm No further evidence of the invariable good quality of their manufactures will be required beyond the following facts: The firm was established in 1849, and since then haa gained prize medals at the Exhibitions of London. Paris, Vienna, etc., for excellence bf manufacture. They are appointed, by, warrant, watchmakers to the Queen of England, Prince of Wales, the Emperor of Russia and the Bey of Tunis. At the Westminttar Aquarium, tho monkey has been described as a human being, a Httls undersized, covered with hair, hitched to a tail, and filled with the devil.
