MOTUEKA HIGHWAY BOARD.

Monthly meeting, November 27th, ; 1880. Present: All the members, but; Messrs Darter and Heath After the confirmation of the minutes of the last meeting and passing the' month's accounts for payment, the secretary made the following report : — ' I have "continued the investigation respecting the right of road through Mr Salisbury's land, and now 'find the; road on the bank of the Motueka river is a legal road, but with regard to that upon the bank of the Graham I am not so certain. I think it would be advisable for. the Board to obtain a legal opinion as to what is really necessary to be done to take a road through a section of land where a right is reserved at the time the Grant is issued. With regard to the complaint -of Mr Flett that a small house had been built upon a public road : in front of his property, I find on investigation at the Land Office, Nelson, that the road referred to is still a pub- \ lie road, but that it is so, is entirely, owing to a mistake, in not stopping the; old road far enough, when the newj road was taken through Mr Allen's \ land. This alteration of road was made! upwards of twenty years ago. Mr; Starries has declined to proceed with hisj contract for .building a bridge across! Poley Bridge Greek, slating that he! made a miscalculation when making out; his tender, the amo*nt of which would \ not cover the cost of the timber re-j quired, but ha j intimated his willingness! to construct a good substantial stone j culvert from 4to 5 feet wide, capable; fef carrying any weight, in lieu of the j bridge he tendered for, at the' same j amount of his tender ,~ £1 1 10s. 6d. I; have invited fresh tenders for the bridge. ! I have invited tenders for "forming"! about 30 chains of the road in Riwakaj Valley, west of Mrs Cook's. I have! also , invited tenders for gravelling! about 54 chains of the main road, be- ' tween the Waimea bouudary and the Moutere Village, and about 55 chains! of the new road in Pangatotara Valley. I would recommend that the bank of the river where it bounds the new road by Mr Tucker's garden should be protected. I think this might be done at small cost, in the same manner as the protective work last done at the Company's ditch, Lower Moutere. I have been informed that the Messrs Edwards and others have completed the bridge across the Company's ditch from the main road to Edwards road, but owing to a circumstance of which the Board IB probably aware, I have -been unable to visit the work this week. The contract for re-flooring Saltwater bridge has been completed, the approach to the bridge on the north side of the west endj which was giving- way, -has been repaired in a very substantial manner. Letter from Waimea County Council read in jreply to one from the Secretary, stating that it was the wish of the Council that, £10, out of the £G0 granted for gravelliDg the road between Mrs. jpook's corner and foot of hills, should be expended in planting willows at Motueka bridge. /'cßesolyed, That, the sum of £10 be expended as rt quested. ! Letter from Mr T. Thr mason read, asking the Board to assist him to the amount of £5 in making about 30 cba ns of the Orinoco-Kosedale track into a cart road. Resolved, TJjat Mr Thompson's application be granted, such amount to be " taken f ro tn -the f u n d accr ued to the Board i from the land fund. Lejfcter from Mr C. Eemnanfc read,

respecting an old road having been stopped adjoining his property. \ Resolved, That the road in question having been legally stopped and sold by the Nelson Land Board, the matter ib entirely out of the Board's hands. Letter from Mr John Evers read; requesting that the Old House Road might be improved near Mr Mills'. OResolved, > That the Secretary inspect the road referred to, and also the one known as Wilta' road. Letter from Mr D. Hall read, requesting to be allowed an old, road not in ÜBe for grazing purposes, and stating that if the Board granted his request he would* clear the gorse growing upon it. Resolved, That the road referred to being inclosed with Mr Staples' property, the Secretary ascertain from him; if he will clear the road for the use of it, and if he declines to do bo, the Board will then take Mr Hall's appli cation into consideration. Resolved, That the Secretary communicate to TVI r Salisbury the result of bis investigation respecting the road; through his land. Resolved, 'that on reconsideration 1 after the Secretary's report, the Board : will for the present, refrain from order- • ing the removal of the small house from the public road between Messrs Allen's and Flett's land. Resolved, That the Board holds ite next meeting on the 24th proximo, the usual day of meeting falling on Christ-: mas Day. ; Kesolved, That the oontractor for putting a new top on Saltwater Bridge: be allowed 10i for extra work. i The Secretary was directed to use tm own judgment with regard to any! more ({ravelling that may be done on ibe Waiwero road. ; The following tenders were ac-, cepted : : — • . j Motutka.— Building bridge by Mr Edelß.ten's house, D.
