Wellington, Saturday night. A slight shock of earthquake was felt here this afternoon. The Magistrate reserved his decision in the charge of smuggling preferred against the captain and steward of the ship Wairoa. Donedin, Monday. A telegram was received to day from Mr Alexander, the agent for the Australian Eleven, accepting the terms offered by the New Zealand Clubs. Arrangements are completed for the Australians' trip as under: — To commence about the 11th January with a two days' match at Invercargill; three days atDunedin; one day at Oamaru; one day at Timaru; three days at Cbristchurch ; three at Wellington; three at Auckland, and, if time permits, two at Wanganui. The team's stay in New Zealand will extend over five weeks. At Clyde on Friday a man named Ballantyne was charged with indecency before n girl aged ten, The Bench sentenced him to six months in Dunedin gaol. As the prisoner was being removed he wrested himself from the attendant constable, and seized the girl saying " I have been punished innocently. I will now do something to be punished for." It took five men to rescue the child from his clutches. He received an additional six months for the assault. The child was not much hurt. Messrs Cargill and Gibbs have received telegraphic advice of the arrival at London on the 27th instant of the Otago in 73 days from Port Chalmers. Greymotjth, Monday. The top plates of the Golden Fleece, Extended, Company, Reef ton, for the weekending November 27th, amounted to 3510zs of amalgam from 142 tons of quartz. Auckland. Monday. The police have ascertained that Brown, a shipping clerk on the wharf, who died suddenly on Saturday from, as was supposed, excessive drinking, purchased poison from King, a chemist. Kicbsrd James Owen was charged with wilfully setting fire to his dwelling bouse and further remanded. Chbistchurch, Monday. The heavy rain last night will do an immense amount of good to the crops which were maturing too rapidly. Replying to a deputation of farmers on Saturday, Mr J P Maxwell, the manager of the railway said he had decided to recommend the Governmert to make a reduction on tenpence per ton of the carriage of grain, which will leave the rates rather higher than under the old tariff, but not excessive.
