Wellington, Monday, Mr E. G. Griffith, of Christchurch, has been appointed by the Wellington Racing Club as handicapper for the summer meeting. Mr Joseph Crawford, merchant, died last night from a stroke of paralysis. He was aged 70, and had been ailing for nearly 12 months. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, Mr Walker, of the Prince of Wales Hotel, and Mr Harding, of the Union, were each fined £1 for a breach of the Licensing Ordinance in selling liquor before the transfer of their licenses had been completed. The German man-of-war Nautilus has just arrived from Melbourne. The Divorce Court opened this morning. Decrees absolute were granted in the following cases : — Ferguson v. Ferguson, of Dunedin ; Hancock v. Hancock, of Dunedin ; Denby v. Denby and Gilbert, of Auckland ; Munro v. Munro and another, of Christhurch. Decrees nisi were granted in tbe caßes of Gillfillan v. Gillfillan and Scott, of Dunedin, and McGhee v. McGhee, of Dunedin. Dunedin, Monday. A ten roomed house in the Glen has been totally destroyed by fire. It was owned by T. Wood. T. Goodlet, the tenant, gave up possession on Friday, but had not removed the whole of his furniture. The fire was detected on Friday night bufc was thought to be extinguished by the neighbors. It was insured in the Norwich Union for £300, of which £100 was re-insured in the Hanseatic, and £100 in the Atlantic. Smith, alias Hardie, received six months for escaping from the prison gang. He was very defiant during the hearing. The Tipperary Company's first crushing of the season yielded 364 oza. Thomas Davis, a seaman, died suddenly at Port Chalmers from heart disease. The first wool sale of the season was held to-day, when 1 29 bales nnd 47 bags were catalogued. Greasy crossbred fetched 9£d to 11-gd ; greasy Merino, lOJd to lid ; pieces, 4Jd to 7§d ; scoured crossbred, 18gd. New Plymouth, Monday. There was a regular mess with the trains on Saturday through two out of the three engines breaking down. The pnssengers from Stratford did not get into town till midnight. Men were engaged till yesterday rppairing the engines. The continuous repairs to tbe worn out engines add to the expen?e of the line considerably.
