Meesra Firth and S. Fowler captained the Nelson and Wakefield teams respectively, and the former winning the toss decided to grp to the wickets, Firth end Balmain being the first to represent Nelson, and both played steadily for some time, bat with the score ar 9 Balmaln succumbed to T. JMen. Halliday joined Firtb, but at 17 the latter was bowled by a trimmer from G. Fowler. Holliday Bbortly afterwards gave a chance to W. Eden at the wicket, which he accepted, the score being 3 for 21. Lawry and Boddinptpn now got together, and ran the score up to 42 by good play, when the former gave a cbance to Tunnicliffe, which was token. The next three wickets fell very quickly, bat F. Greenfield came to the rescue, and being well backed ud by Holmea and Topliss they kept the field alive, Greenfield making a pretty not out iooinga of 19, Holmes sod Toplisa also rooking good doubles, and the total of 107 wbs reached before the latter was bowled by T. Eden. The Nelsoo men took the field at once, and W. Eden and G. Fowler were the first to handle the willow for Wake field, . the former taking first over from Holmes. Steady play wbs the order of the dsy. and it could be seen that the Wakefield men were determined if possible to top the Bcore of their opponents, and at the same time the Nelson men did their level best in the field to prevent it. With the score at 5 G. Fowler was taken by h beauty from Firtb, and J. Arnold filled the vacancy, and together with Eden ran tbe score up to 19, when Holmes found the latter's weak point, and be retired for a well got 12. T. Eden joined Arnold, but Holmes was "dead on," and quickly dismissed both Eden and S. Fowler. Silcock took Fowler's place, and immediately commenced scoring, both batsmen showing good cricket and stubborn defence till Nay lor managed to get one past Arodld, and he retired for a capital 15. Wadsworth partnered Silcock, and between them they made it; lively for the fields, but with the score at 66 the latter gave a chance to Greenfield at cover-point, which was prettily taken, and he retired for a very good 14. Wadsworth played steadily for some time, but at last placed tbe ball in Balmain's hands, having played a very good innings for 11. The remaining batsmen scored very slowly, but- gave considerable trouble till Greenfield ran Baigent out by a smart piece of fielding; and the last wicket fell for a total of 81. ahe Wakefield men immediately took the field, Firth and Greenfield handling the bat, the former taking first over from T. Eden. With the score at 7, Greenfield was given out 1.b.w. ; at 8, Firth" unfortunately suffered a similar late, and Balmain was caught by Silcock without scoring. Halliday played a very patient not-out inniDgs for 30, ■which was of great service to his side.

Some very steady play was shown during this, innings, and the lest wicket did not fall till the score had reached 99. PJay was quickly resumed by tbe Kelson men again taking the field, Knapp and G. Fowler representing Wakefield. Both batsmen played capitally, but at 23 Lawry dismissed Knapp, and at 24i Fowler also gave j way to the same bowler, he having made a well got 13. Lawry was bowling well, and took four wickets in two consecutive overs. S. IFowler and T. Eden now got together, and played till time was called, the former having made 17 in his usual style, the total being 49 for 4 wickets.
