Nelson Evening Mail. MO ND AY, NOVEMBER 15, 1880.

It is with sincere pleasure that we are able, to Renounce today that the Anchor line of a»GHinerß— with the exception of the Lyttelton— the foundry, " wtinrf, and coal hulk are to be reiained by a Nelson proprietary, : and th it these well known and favorite boatf) are still to continue in their old. trade wi'h this port as their headquarfpra. The new owners are Messrs Sclanders & Co., Cock & Co., Mr Peter D'iriald, and Mr Alexander Brown, who has for many years past been in charge of fcbe engineering department of the property, in the superintendence of which he has displayed considerable skill and untiring energy. The combination is a powerful.one, and promises well for the success of the little fiVet which has so long been a ' credit to this port, and will continue to be worked as efficiently as ever. The price has . sot transpired, and, we understand, it is not likely to be made public. That, however, is . not a matter concerning any but those directly interested* but what does concern .everyone in any way whatever connected with business in Nelson is that the fleet has been secured by a local proprietary, and has not passed away into other bands. This will he easily understood when we state that the monthly payments in connection with the steamers, foundry, &c , in wages alone amount ,to about £1500 per month Had this been ■withdrawn from circulation within our , limited community the result would have teen such that none connected with trade in the place would care to even con template, and besides there is the further advantage of our merchants being able by their own steamers to keep up the trade with the West Coa*t ports. We heartily wish. the new owners the full meed of success which their enterprise deserves, and we even venture to hope (bat under the new management the business may so increase as to demand ere long the extension of the fleet, and the substitution of larger and more powerful boats for those which have done such good work in developing and maintaining the trade between Nelson and the ports on the West Coast of this island. By the public generally the news I hat the well known flag .is still to hail from Nelson will be received with the utmost satisfaction, while those more imm.ediai.ely concerned, namely (he numerous employes, who for months past I, have been unsettled a--:d uneasy not knowing „wh«t was in store for them, will learn with '/. a. feeling of relief and gratification that there will be no need for them to break ud their homes and, to seek new ones. Having once been so nearly deprived of this valuable property with its' contingent advantages to the "place, the: people of Nelson will, we feel sure, .require no pressing to. induce them to do all. ; )., in ; ;their power to support the new owners in : VJ thejr enterprising veniure. .[ I. The first of Mr Proctor's series of lectures will be given at the Theatre to-morrow evening. Holders of tickets for the course can now secure their seats at Mr H. D. Jackson's. The trial of the new patent fire annibilator by the Brigade on Saturday night satisfactorily proved the utility of the invention, especially in checking a fire when first discovered and before it has attained formidable proportions, and it may thus be the means of preventing the total destruction of much valuable property. The return match between the Civil Service and members of the Nelson Cricket Club took place.on Saturday afternoon, and again resulted in the defeat of the former by ,61 runs. For the Nelson Cricket Club Lawry playf d an exceedingly good innings for 45, which iucluilcd some fine hits to leg. Balmnin made a pretty 14, and Campbell ployed a stendy not-out iuuinps for 20, the total being- 107. For tho Civil Service, F. Greenfield quickly ran up I*, but the others did very little towards swelling the total, which only reached 46. Firth and Lawry h<«wled well for the Nelson Club, as did Holmes and Naylor for the Civil Service. Next Saturday the Nelson Club will try conclusions against the Wakt-field Club, wbich should be a very interesting and close match.
