Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1880.
The annual Elower Services will be held at the Congregational Church to-morrow, and will, no doubt, on this as on the last occasion attract large congregations. Contributions of flowers will be thankfully received at the Church this evening after six o'clock. The annual home missionary meeting will be held in the Wesleyan Cnurch on Monday evening, when addresses will be delivered by several of the ministers now on a visit to Nelson. Tea will be on the table from six to seven, after which there will be an interval of an hour in order to enable those who may be desirous of doing so to visit the Flower Show at the Provincial Hall. At the request of a number of his friends, Mr Hart, who has almost recovered from his recent accident, will give a farewell entertainment on Monrfay evening prior to lub departure for Wellington. Amongst other novelties, he will introduce " Galvanic Tommv," a young gentleman who proved exceedingly attractive in Auck'and, where he held large levees every evening. From time to time to time we have heard of actions at law between E. J. QVonor'and a man named Johnston, arising out of Borne catle transactions. For a few weeks or months these would drop, and then crop up again, generally taking a new form on each occasion. Hitherto these trials have been confined to the West Coast Courts, but it now seems that arisiug out of them is a perjury case, in which one Gilmer, who was on arbitrator between the parties, is the defendant, which will be heard at the Supreme Court^n Nelson on the 17th of next month. This will be a costly trial for the country as witnesses will have to be brought up from the West Coast, Wellington, and Timoru. A tkial of Beruheim'a patent fire annihilating liquid, for which Messrs Sclandersand Co. are the local agents, is to be made by the [Fire Brigade this evening at 8 o'clock when two bonfires vvi-1 be lighted on the mud flat near the Post Office, on one of which the water will be brought to bear, while the other is to be extinguished by the " annihilator," the time being taken in each case in order to ascertain which is the more to he dreaded by fire—its ancient enemy water, or its new fangled foe for which it is claimed that it is an immediate extinguisher. A rocket fired from the Post Office will be the signal for the brigade to start from the station. The "Customs receipts for the week ending this day amounted to £946 15s 7d.,
We understand that the Young Men's Christian Association contemplate holding a Christian Conference on New Year's Day, similar to the one held at Bishopdale. On reference to our advertising columns will be seen the abridged prospectus of the Caswell Sound Marble Portlaud Cement and Mining Company, Limited, the share list of which clospß on tl>e 15! h December. Sharp & Pickering report sales of 32 Buik of Now Zealand shares at £21 cum 'Hn'riend ; 100 Bank of New Zealand shares, £■20 5a ex dividend ; 44 Union Steamship Company shares, £9 5s ; 240 Colonial Bank shores, £46 6 s ; 235 New Zen land and Loan shares, £10. House and land in Snelbourneslrcet belonging to Mr Oliver for £350. This following paragraph is from the Tondon Times of September 10: — "Among 'he varied mineral riches of California, that i >f chrome ore, for the manufacture of bichromnte of potash, so largely used in making colours nnd pigments, and iu charging batteries for telegraph purposes, is assuming a remarkable importance. The chrome ore is found associated with serpen■ine., and (he mines are situate near San Luis Obispo, from the shipping harbour of which —Port Harford— ls,ooo tons have been sent ■may within the la?t three ypars. The average production yielded from 2,0001b. of chrome iron, containing 50 per cent of chromium, is about 1, 6001b of bichromate of potash. During the year 1879 the following were the statistics of the trade : - Import of bichromate, 2,621,0001b. ; domestic manufacture, 4,258.t)001b ; total, 6.882 0001b. ; and, as the requirements of chemical science are annually increasing, it is likely that a considerable mining industry will be added to those already existing in California" It was reported (says the Posi) that the Premier would go to Auckland in the Hinemoa lo receive his Excellency Sir Arthur Gordon, but we understand that it is very doubtful whether Mr Hall will be able to get away. The Marl'oiouqh Times of the 9ih instant says:— "We understand that Mr Hickson, olerk to the Blenheim R. M. Court, has rpceived notice of his removal to Nelson in place of an official promoted. A Wellington correspondent of the Wanganui Chn-n'cle, in a letter published on Satur day, stated that Mr Proctor had been engaged in Australia by Mr Smythe, and w»s under engagement to him for two years at £50 per week. On arrival iu Wanganui the statement was shown to Mr Proctor, who immediately instructed his solicitor to demand a retraction and on apology. Mr Proctor denies emphati cally the statement, there not being a particle of foundation for it. The first lecture, advertised for to-night, has been postponed, pending a retraction of the alleged injurious statement. Mr Re veil R.M., heard the charges agaifist the Inangahua County Councillors of having illegally voted themselves moneys from the County income. The evidence showed that a guinea per sitting, the meetings taking place monthly, had been voted each member on the motion of Mr Byrne, seconded by Mr M'Gaffin. Iu the case of Mr Williams and Mr. Br< nnan the complainant was unable to prove that either had recorded his vote, and the- cases were consequently dismissed. In Mr M'Gaffin's case he admitted having voted and his Worship inflicted a fine of £5 and costs. 'Mr M'Gaffin gave notice of appeal. — Westpo-t Times.
