In the Supreme Court the case of Michael McCarthy, cbaiged with perjury in the Resident Magistrate's Court at Patea, Came before the Court, when a verdict was returned of not guilty. Judge Richmond remarked that from the number of challenges in empaucl*ling the jury it was almost impossible in a small place to get au impartial oue. He was apprehensive that ifc would be necessary Io have a modification of the jury laws or justice would be seriously endangered*. The remedy, he said, was tbat when a charge waa brought against an old settler in a small district the case should not be tried in that district. John Eraser Bell pleaded guilty to falsify. ing tbe register of a child's birth, and was sentenced to three mouths' imprisonment. Dunudin, Eriday. William Drysdale, drysalfcer, dropped dov/n dead in George-street yesterday from heart disease. Messrs Fisb and Ross, Councillors, have been nominated for the City Mayoralty. Wellington, Friday. The Waste Lands Board propose recommending Parliament to impose an export duty upon kauri gum, and to issue licenses to ctig similar to miners' rights. -A fire broke out in Williams' bakery in Grey-street, last night, through hot ashes being left in an exposed place. The damage was slight, as the fire was quickly extinguished.
