Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1880.

At the Mfagist rates' Court thia morning, after a delay of balf an hour in securing the necessary number of Justices, one small debt case, which composed the whole business, was disposed of. Oliver Urene and Charles Wilson were charged by the police with stealing a three-wheel child's carriage, the property of D'Auvergne Horton, but the case was postponed until 3.30 this afternoon. The popular clamor with regard to the reprieve of Ned Kelly, the murderer who is now awaiting his doom in a felon's cell, is not likely, it seems, to have auy weight with the Victorian Executive, and the execution is fixed to take place to-morrow. A mispbint ocours in the heading of an article on the fourtn page which should read "The New American President" instead of " Premier." .Reuter's Agency baviDg considered the marriage of tbe Esrl of Malmesbury with a young girl of twenty-four summers of sufficient importance to cable a distance of 15,000 miles, we have had the curiosity to Jook up the age of the youthful bridegroom,

who, we land, was born in 1807, aud is consequently three years past the term of life usually allotted to man. It is to bo hoped tbat the newly- married couple will come in for a larger share of happiness than is generally the outcome of the union of November and May. There was a good attendance at the Theatre last night, when Mr and Mrs Hart gave the second of their series of entertainments to an audience who appeared to be well pleased with their evening's amusement. We are sorry to bave to report that there will be no performance this evening, owing to an accident which occurred last nigbt to Mr Hart who, in walking round at the back of the stage, trod on a piece of wood in which there was a nail which pierced the boot and penetrated his foot to tho bone, and tbis morning he was unable to put his foot to the floor, but we trust he may be able to appear again before leaving Nelson. Mr Hart wishes to return his sincere thanks for the kindness of Manor Pitt and the several officers of the different Volunteer companies for tbeir patronage last night. Up to tbe time of our going to press, no answer had been received from Mr Sharp iu reply to the requisition asking bim to become a candidate for the Mayoralty of Nelson. The time for sending in tenders for the purchase of the Auchor Line of steamers expired ou Monday last, bufc up to the present time nothing has transpired relative to the number of offers received, or the probability of a sale being effected. The gentleman who has been instrumental in inducing the lady pianiste aud teacher of music, Madame Cecilia Summerhayes, to whom we have already referred in these columns, to leave New South Wales for Nelson, informs us that he has heard from thai lady by the mail just arrived to the effect that she has heen detained longer than she expected, through her having acceded to the request of some friends to give a few concerts in New South Wales before leaving. She may, however, be expected here iu about a week's time. In referring to the recital on the. pianoforte she was about to give the Tnmworlh (N S.W.) News Letter says:— " Madame Summerhayes brings with her the reputation of being in the froht rank of interpreters of the works of these brilliant masters of the " art divine.'* Many of our readers have, doubtless, heard with delight her recitals in the International Exhibition Building, and such fortunate individuals need no persuasion of ours to renew their musical experiences with Madame Summerhayes. All others Bhould make an effort to hear her; and thus give themselves an evening's rare enjoyment and help to vindicate the {esthetic taste of this community iu the appreciation of bigb class music and artistic ability." The following are gazetted as postmasters ig the Nelson district, the appointments to date from the Ist October:— Mr John Roby, atApplebyj Mr J. 11. Kidson, at Tadmor; and Mr Cavgill, at the Port. The Wairarapa correspondent of the N. Z. Times gives to Nelson residents his following good Matured advice: — "Nelson look to your laurels, or in a short time the well-earned title of "Sleepy Hollow" will have to be transferred to Greytown. On Wednesday morning the largest building in that township was destroyed by fire, yet I am informed that people sleeping some fifty or sixty yards from thc scene were not disturbed in their slumbers ; and, on rising at their usual time, were considerably astonished to see only the chimneys of the hotel standing." TnE following London telegrams dated October 28 appear iu the Sydney papers :— Lord Salisbury haa delivered a trenchant speech on political affairs, in which he ridi culed the policy of the Government. The speech has given rise to considerable discussion, and has been made the subject of comment in all the daily papers —Several British Radicals of prominence iu the ranks of the party have strongly protested against the prosecution commenced against the Irish agitators in Ireland. A portion of the Press, representing the Radical party, has also spoken strongly in antagonism to the proceedings of the Government.— Advices received from Caprera state that Garibaldi is lying sick and utterly prostrated, lt is feared that the famous old general will not recover, as he is now seventy- three years of age, and his constitution is much shaken.
