NELSON V. MOTUEKA.

This match was played oh the Motueka ground yesterday &n& resulted in a drawn game owing to an arrangement made by the captains of the respective teams that it should be played out or drawn. A very good wicket bad been prepared, but thc ground was very damp and treacherous. which to a great extent accounts for the small scoring on both sides. Firth, the Captain of the Nelson team, having won the toss, decided to go to the wickets, he and Halliday taking the bat, the former receiving the first over from Delaney. With the score afc 1 1 , Delaney dismissed Halliday with a shooter. Balmain filled the vacancy and both batsmen showed good cricket and ran the score up to 39 when Firth was bowled by a trimmer from Delaney, he having made 19 runs in capital style. Balmain was unfortunately run out the same oyer and tho remaining batsmen added but two runs to the score, the innings closing for 41. After a lunch prepared by host Coppins, to which full justice was done, the Nelson men took the field, and Motueka was represented by Simpson and Fowler, the former taking the Orst over from Holmes, and, although a good stand was made by all the Motueka players, the bowling was too good to score from. The innings took considerably over two hours, tho principal feature being tbe batting of Boyce, who hit well for 14 and was then given out leg before wickefc. The innings closed for 37, or only four less than their opponents. The Motueka men were soon in the field, and Nelson was this time represented by Messrs Firth and A. Greenfield. Firth was the only player to make a stand and he quickly made 16 when he was smartly run out. Balmain was again unfortunate in beiug run out, and the others added but few runs to the score, which closed for 46 In the second innings of the Motueka team four wickets were down for 17 runs when lime was called, D. Pattie being not out for 9. The match throughout was very exciting owing to its being so even.
