He , leaves for England almost immediately. , Sir Dillon Bell's salary has been fixed at , £1200 per annum, for which he ants as , Agent-General and Ageut tor the Inscription , of Stock without commission. Tbe forthcoming Mayoral election is causing great interest. Three candidates are already announced. , At the Magistrates'. Court au information ' was heard against Dr Hoadley, late of tbe , Waimate, for an attempt to smuggle a roll of cloth ashore from the ship St. Leouard's The roll was being brought up the wharf late last night when the night watchman stopped him. A fine of £25 was inflicted. | A telegram from Gisborue states that the iron barque Lochnagar, which is loading there for London, parted her cable this morn--1 ing and is now high and dry on the beach. Neither vessel uor cargo has sustained any ' damage. Christchtjrch, Wednesday. The chief feature of the hospital enquiry so far has been the denial by Dr Townsend that be ever saidthe woman I^oeley was ill of typhoid fever except to her husband.. "Up asserted in evidence that at any rate he had no recollection of ever having said so to any> oue elße, but. two other witnesses stated that be did. The gravamen of the chargein this case is that the woman was admitted to the hospital while suffering from typhoid fever, and that when she died it was called gastro euteretis, aud no report was ever made to the Board of Health as required by law. There was a severe frost last night. Snow felt on Tuesday on the lower ranges, and the weather generally is unfavorable to shearing and lambing. Six hundred course tickets have been sold for Mr Proctor's lectures. Hawera, Wenesday. Eighteen applications were received yeßterday at Hawera and Carlisle for deferred pay ment sections. Only about a dosen sections were not applied for. Most of those applied for will have to go to auction on Thursday. Auckland, Wednesday. The Board of Education, in conference with the City School Committee today, resobed to diminish the floor space in tin schools to eight feet for each child, in view of tbe enforcement of ihe compulsory attendance clause At the Supreme Court a new trial was applied for in the case Bank of New South Wales versus Royal Insurance Company. The application was granted. Mr Moss made a sirong speech in favor of local Government at Paruell last night, and received an unanimous vote of thanks and confidence. Timaru, Wednesday. Mundell and Co's auction mart and horse repository at Qeraldine was burnt down at half past ten last eveuiug. A large quantity of harness and feed, and a valuable horse belonging to Kennedy and Carter, who leased the premises, were burned. The building was insured for £300, and the extra loss is estimated at £700. The lessees suffer heavily being uninsured. The Agricultural Show to day was a big success, fully three thousand people being on the ground. The best prizes for sheep were awarded to P. A. Russell ; for wheat to James Guscott and Norman Line. Janvier was adjudged the best thorougbred stallion. Ddnedin, Wednesday. The Rotomahana takes away this afternoon 120 saloon and 55 steerage passengers. ;
