—■fa" WBBW »P— I Mill 111 l II ■■ill 'ill' I"* ■*' i' \l ii-t»iiwak» - Sunday Fetes. — English society (writes "'Dagonet" in tho " Referee) has 'professed itself to be shocked at Mr Bright' s declaration that the upper classes have little respect for the practice of religion,'and yet in their hearts they must know that it is indisputably true. At a time wh'en Sabbatarianism absolutely oppresses the poor and interferes with the liberty of the lower middle classes, tbe aristocracy has openly cast away all decent observance of the Lord's day. Cards, 1 ' billiards, and games, of chance are pldyed in 'the'best' houses, and* even the country is disturbed with the noisy rev6lry of the upper ten's Sunday outing, pne Sunday this month, at the residence: of a gentleman in the country, there was danc'ng 'to military musjc, lawn tenAisj crouqet, and high jinks generally. jThis company consisted of the elite of society, male and female, and amongst them '.'was an illustrious person. In this flagrant desecration of the .Sabbath (I quoting the current phrase) 'all present so heartily joined. Snah fetes are now of .frequent. occurrence, on the, Load's day, and are always largely attended by the aristocracy." . . v . ;% •. The Auckland Telegraph office has; received a pamphlet, published at 3E>erne,[ containing a list of all,, the "telegraph stations in the world.. There are 40,292 stations'. The • < Herald;' after^peru'sing . the list, is struck with the' frequency with which a name occurs. For example there are three Aberdeen? in the -United; States, thirty-four Newtons, three Londons, onefof which is in Canada, and iwo are in the United States, ';" the Alexandrias'and Alexandras occiipya column ; to themselves, ■while a score bf Newport'sbewilder the reader. The are five Palestines in America, but no Zion -(so the omission is atoned for' by a large number of Zionvilles being inserted. Our American cousins are a practical people, and they have endeavered to get over the difficulty by going further afield, and enriching their nomenclature with such far-stretched appellations as " Shirt tail Bend," " Hell-gate," " The Devil's Slide," and "The Devil's Elbow." The N. Z. Times of Monday says : — Two correspondents, who for • some !ittl6 time have been gold-seeking at Terawbiti, have furnished us with information as to the prospects there. They are experienced miners, and what they state may be relied on. They were membirs of a party of seven who went, out furnished with all necessary appliances for mining, and have worked steadily for tetfrdayp, but so far without getting any payable prospect, and the general opinion of other men at work there is [that the ground
will^ tiotj. .yield \ wages, atidj indeed, barely tucker, the average cost of each ! man's living there, on commonest fare, being about 12s per week.; All provisions have; to be carried through the bush for some distance over a bad track. pigs are to ber found in the district, but the ; proprietor of the land over which "they run will not allow dogs to be, used, and thus it ia impossible to get them. . Game of any kind is very scarce in the district. Eeferringto some' exaggerated statements made as t6 the returns from th J e claims there, our informants assert that ho party ever got two ounces of gold for one week's work. The best claim there only yielded a little over three ounce> for six weeks washing. They ; also 1 question the statement made by a man named Brothers that he had found payable gold wherever he sunk. They have no desire to run down the place, or deter anyone from trying their luck, but they desire to guard against any ".undue.' expectation ,~off anything, more th ariai)are;living being obtained there, unless^ with more effective appliances than are at present in use. Their own j experience, so far, has been that after an expenditure of £12 to £14 for toolap &c, tnd many days hard labor, the result; has been nil.
