Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1880.
The fourth competition for the gold medal presented to the H Battery of Artillery by Mr Charles McGee was fired this morning, and resulted in Corporal Hood being the highest scorer with a total of 54 out of a possible 75. A notice appears in the Gazelle of the 14th inst. to the effect that from and after the Ist November next, the public prisons at tbe Thames, Russell, Opotiki, Charleston, Reefton, Picton, Arrow, and Queenstown, shall cease to be public prisons. A sale of work in aid of the All Saints j Institute fund will be held at the Masonic Hall to-morrow and on Wednesday evening. Among a large variety of useful and artistic articles will be found four o'clock tea tables, crewel and Berlin wool work, real lace antimacassars, aprons, collars, &c. A doll's pavition handsomely furnished, and a large quantity of children's clothing will also be found to possess considerable attraction both f or parents and little oues.
