\ The New York Herald publishes a letter from a correspondent wfeq'.ocQompaoied the late Arctic, Expedition to King William's Lend. The story refers more particularly to theidcidents of the great sledge journey. iPhis is supplemented, however, by the ,discovery of relics and (he examination of native witnesses, which lead to the EarJ conclusion that the fate of the officers «jnd crew of the Erebus and Terror wa.B terrible, even (o the utmost limit of the imagination, and that the records of the Franklin Expedition are lost beyond tjecovery. Old men and' women' of the Esquimaux tell the story of those who were doubtless the last survivors of those unfortunate vessels with a minute* . rices of detail and evident truthfulness which place their fate, beyond a doubt. Of. what became of their great leader, and a large number of mf-n who constituted the crews, nothing could be discovered. Only a small party of officers,. black about (he mouth, with no flesh about their bones, were :seen -Irnggiog a boat acrces the ice, and then they disappeared, and nothing more was seen of them until their skeletons were found under their boat uhd in a tent, a prey to wild beasts, and with dreadful evidence that they had been driven (o feed on the weaker of their companions before finally yielding to starvation and cold. Such is the Bad conclusion which the discoveries of this expedition lead to. What became of (be records of the Franklin expedU tion that were with this party is also pjtinfully evident from the testimony of native?, who naturally considered them of no importance, and by whom they were allowed to lie around as playthings for their, children, and were eventually deeiirpyetl.
