Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1880.

" Sir Julius Vogel does not intend favoring tbe colony with his presence at present." So we are told by a Dunedin telegram to-day, a friend of the Agent General's whose impatience to learn his intentions urged him to spend a few pounds on a cable message (" Reply paid " let us hope) having received »n answer to that effect. Well, perhaps, Sir Julius is wise in hi3 generation. The present would not be an auspicious time for a min of his ■well-known extravagant propensities to make a new start in public life in tho colony. Even he, with all his powers of persuasion, could scarcely persuade tbe people to further encumber their estate juat yet, and without plenty of money to spend Sir Julius would, to use a sporting phrase, be nowhere. For a time at least he must be content to make his way without tbe aid of the colony whicb raised him to his present position, and New Zealand will endeavor, successfully we have no doubt, to get along without tbe presence of Sir Julius. The quarterly competition by the Naval Brigade for the Company's Cup took place at tbe Mud Fiat range yesterday morning, ■when it was won by Seaman D. Burn with a score of 62. A cikculaii has been received by Captain Webb, the Adjutant for Nelson, stating that it is not the intention of the Government to place a sum on the Estimates next year for capitation allowance to Volunteers. A very interesting lecture upon personal reminiscences of a visit to the Holy Land was delivered by Sir W. Fox last night in the Wesleyan Chapel which was crowded in every part. At the close a cordial vote of thanks was accorded to the lecturer on the motion of Mr Haddow. To-night Sir William will lecture on Temperance at the Port Public Hall, and to-morrow evening at the Theatre on the history of the English Bible. On the fourth page will be found a letter from the Melbourne correspondent of the Auckland Star which places quite a different complexion on the Exhibition and its results from that to which we have been accustomed in all the other accounts that have come under our notice hitherto.
