Timaru, Wednesday. Lilla Greaves, a young girl on remand for stealing money from a lady who had lodged her out of charity, was sentenced to two months with hard labor. On each occasion when before the Court she refused to plead, maintaining an obstinate silence, but the medical evidence favored her sanity. After her sentence she expressed a determination to drown herself as soon as she gained her liberty. The harbor works have been entirely slopped for the past month, awaiting the arrival of a small dredge ordered from England which could have been readily manufactured in Dunedin or Christchurch. Considerable distrust is expressed at the manner in which the Board is delaying the work by resolutely declining to patronise the colonial foundries. Wellington, Wednesday. An official telegram from the Camp states that Te Whiti has been bitten by a dog, and is very ill. \ Tbe two ex-Commissioners of Railways formally retired from their offlces yesterday, and handed over all the publio property in their charge to the Government. At the Palmerston ■ Police Court: to day*, Alexander Arran, Philip M'Carthy, Mary Hood, and Martha Power were charged with unlawfully distilling spirits on the 28tli September last. Power pleaded guilty, and gave evidence against the others, who were fined £200 each, or twelve months' imprisonment. Power was discharged. Notice of appeal wns given. A number of informations, against Chinesb for fan fan playing at Lawrence were dis* missed because the police had not proved the Town or County ordinance. ' Mr Proctor in concluding his series of lectures announced his intention of returning to Dunedin and delivering two more lectures on comets. A three roomed cottage in South Dunedin belonging to Thomas Healey was burned down last night. It was insured for £200, but the office is not krown. Auckland, Wednesday.
