FEEDING THE PEOPLE.

[From the Times.'] As the attendance afc the Alexandra Palace, London, on August 2, was the largest by many thousands ever known at any public place of entertainment, it may be interesting to give Borne par-

ticulars respecting the demands up'on the refreshment departments. There was consumed 720 dozen of spirits; 470 dozen of wine; 1,600 dozen bottles of ale; 750 dozen bottles of stout; 9000 dozen lemonade, gingerbeer, soda water, and seltzer water; 350 barrels draught ale; 30,000 cups of tea and coffee j 12,600 one shilling teas; 22 tons meat; 60,000 buns and cakes; 12 van loads of salad ; 7 tons of potatoes; 7,600 dinners; 42,000 loaves of bread. £-M0 worth of fruit was sold, and £175 were taken for sweetmeats alone. It is estimated that plate to the value of £100 was either broken or lost. The staff in the refreshment departments numbered 1,140 persons. In the lavatory 13,000 towels and 230,000 gallons of water were used. All the entertainments were free, and it is calculated that 8,000 visitors attended the theatre ; 20,000 saw the different performances of" Red Biding Hood;" 12,000 listened to the concerts; and 9,000 witnessed the wrestling tournaments. The total number of visitors was 107,852. It is most satisfactory on such an occasion j as this to know that there was nob a single instance of disorderly conduct on the part of this immense concourse; and that the only police charges were ' twenty-five children of tender age, j whose offence, individually and collectively, was wandering astray from their parents and guardians.
