THE NELSON ROWING CLUB.
To the EDixoa or the " Evening Mail." Sir, — So there is a Rowing Club belonging to Nelson. I am sure one would scarcely think so; but as I noticed . several capital racing gigs in the Nj,val Brigade's Shed the other day, I made enquiries and found they belonged to the Nelson Rowing Club. Hearing that name I suddenly remembered having noticed something about a meeting of members of sush a Club some time back, when several prominent citizens of Nelson
bad the honor of bekg elected to the posts of the various offices connected with such a Club. I also recollect (I had forgotten the existence of the Club, it having seemingly collapsed) that, seeing that the Nelson Rowing Club intended opening the season with a proceseion of boats on a certain Saturday afternoon, taking an interest in boating I wandered down to the Port to witness the proceedings, and what did I see ? The procession was with difficulty composed of three racing gigs and a couple of pleasure boats; and these started round the harbor in capital order. That was at the start. The finish was amusing. The gigs came in any how, and the pleasure boats were to be seen in the distance cruising about the harbor ! This is far froai satisfactory, but the Club having opened the season, I imagined members would go in for steady practice, and that the Club would soot) ceaao to occupy Btich a ridiculous position* Unfortunately, I was too presumptuous. I understand there has scarcely been a crew out since that eventful Saturday j and whilst other Clubs it) the polony have their ,boats in daily use, ,the members of the Nelson Club stand by and see (heir boats gradually decay before their eyes for want of use. I hear it is a notorious fact thut although in possession of a four-oar outrigger the Club cannot muster a crew for her, and so she is entirely "shelved." I trust this will cause members to awake to the true state of affairs, and that the gigs will be seen out regUlurly everyday, for until this is done, as it is in oth<r places, many more like myself and others will have com pletely forgotten the existence of the so-called Nelson Rowing Club. — I am, &c, Aquatic.
