The ordinary fortnightly meeting was held I last night. Present: The Mayor, Crs Little, Everett, Greig, Tmsk, and Levien. Leave of absence was granted to Cr Cross . . A letter was read from Mr T. Good to lay a drain from Messrs Sclanders aud Co.'s warehouse to the sewer in Hardystreet. j A letter wa3 received from Mr Akeraten |- agreeing to hold open his offer re the bridges fora reasfliable time after the public had arrived at a decision on the question of the loan. The fol'bwing recommendations of the Gas \ and Waterworks Committee were adopted: — That a three-indh water pipe be laid in \ Hampden-street; that, 500 3£ inch'pipes bo ' ordered from home. A recommendation by they Public Works Committee that the water table be cleaned out, a cross culvert made, and a few loads of gravel laid ou the road near Mr P. Donald's residence, was agreed tOi The City Surveyor in his report referred \ to the wanton destruction of the street lamps by boys. The City Surveyor reported the death of William M urn ford, who had been a good and faithful servanc of the Corporation for four years. He had left a widow and three children totally unprovided for. In reply to a letter from certain residents in Washington Valley respecting a newly made road there, it was resolved that if the road was properly constructed and extended to 40 feet in width ths Council would have no objection to take it over, but until taken over the Council would authorise no expenditure upon it. Cr Levien suggested that tlie 'services of the overseer of the sea wall now being erected at the Port might be dispensed with. —The City Surveyor said tha work would probably occupy another month,>nd,it was decided to retain the overseer. A tender was received from Mr W. Johnson for £3 10a per month for the marine baths. Thia beiDg the only tender it was accepted. Cr Little called attention to the disgraceful Btate of New-street. Referred to the Works Committee. Cr Little said that Halifax -street east wanted looking to, and several other parts of the town. It was decided that the Works Committee should visit all the places referred to. Cr Trask said there was an open ditch in Waimea Road wanted filling up. —Referred to the City Surveyor. Cr wanted the footpath to be kerbed between Tutty's and Rowell'a.—Referred to the Works Committee. In reply to Cr Everett, the Mayor stated that after the meeting of the previous night the question of the loan had lapsed.
