Melbourne, Wednesday. In the Legislative Council last night, Mr. Cutbbert brought forward a motion for a conference of the two Houseß in' reference to payment of members. Mr. .Read, representing the Croverqment, opposed the motion, but it was carried by eighteen to five". The Council was willing to-pass payment to members of the Assembly, but not to the Upper House. — — Sir William -and LadyjJervis and-JBuite have arrived here from. South Australia. Bbisbane, Thursday. In the Legislative Assembly last night the Colonial Treasurer thoved the second reading pf a Bill to autborise the bonstruciibh of railways under the land grant .syß'tem*,. The measure provides for a grant of 8,000 acres per mile of line constructed in alternate blocks, the line to remain the property of the constructors. It is stated that if the Bill passes, a line of railway will be constructed to the Gulf of Carpentaria from Roma, whicb place, is already connected by rail, with Brisbane.
