■ Loneox, July 30. A great shock was caused by. the news of tfce defeat of General 'Bunows' brigade, communicated by_the Marquis of Hartington to the House of Commons on Ju y 28. The Government immediately took mo it energetic measures' to despatch reinforcements. The news created immense sensation in Paris; many French papers blaming the policy of the Liberal Government.- The Rationale observes that Mr Gladstone advanced somewhat rashly in several cases and this is the only case in which he has receded, and be is now bound to take the inoffensive again. The Pays says that the Premier proved himself absolutely wrong iv all his. -previsions and calculations ; while the Debats pointed oit that the' English Cabinet must now feel convinced that something far different from purely nominal assistance will have to be given to the Ameer of their -choice." The Nationale Zeitung'- of Berlin attributes the renetitiou of such disasters to the vacillating 1 ol'cy of the , British; Government and the faulty : . strategy of the British millitary commander. .
